So concerned are the Republicans about losing control of Congress that, ironically, they were crossing their fingers on Tuesday night for a victory by the party's most liberal senator in a hotly contested primary election in Rhode Island.

Senator Lincoln Chafee, who voted against the war in Iraq and against Bush in the 2004 presidential election, was facing a stiff challenge for the Republican nomination from a right-wing conservative who firmly backs the president's war policy.

But the Republican National Committee was pushing hard for the liberal Chafee because, despite being a thorn in Bush's side, he represents the party's best chance for holding their Senate seat in Rhode Island, a heavily Democratic state.

When I checked last night, twice as many Democrats had voted for the leader in the Senatorial primary as voted for Chaffee. The totals were between two and three times as many Democrats.

He's not safe yet.

Whitehouse will have to work hard to beat Chafee, I agree Chafee is popular, there are many RI'ers who remember his dad John Chafee as Governor, sometimes being popular should take a back seat.
