Conservatives forget talking points, rant against left on gas prices

Sean Hannity the other day said that liberals and the media owe President Bush an apology for questioning his leadership when gas prices were on the rise, and should give Bush credit for the recent price drop -- about 22 cents/gallon on average over the past two weeks.

Meanwhile, radio clown Mark Levin ranted last night about how liberals don't understand the laws of supply and demand. Supply is up, he said, and prices have dropped. He then made fun of "Schmucky Schumer" (Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and demanded that Schumer apologize to the American people for questioning earlier this year whether Big Oil was artificially hiking prices.

I found this all very amusing.

And I do not understand why every right thinking iberal/progressive/democratic candidate does not do the same! I mean that! Just in time for the elections...gas prices come down!

4. Why are futures down?

Transportation is the leading consumer of petroleum. Near 80% of oil is consumed moving stuff around.

The leading trade-in at auto dealerships is an SUV. The Auto manufacturers who made bundle pushing these things are hurting--Ford and Chevy both emphasized these vehicles and now are paying the price.

The demand for Gasoline will remain lower than predicted for a long time--that's one reason oil companies aren't eager to build new refineries.

True, the price of crude is down but I think that too has to do with supply and demand. Demand is down which is why supply is up.

5. the bloomberg article

referenced in the post talks about worldwide supply. there's a huge debate about whether we are peaking in demand now, and will run out quickly, or whether there are sufficient reserves for the foreseeable future.

apparently, there are huge untapped reserves in Canada. might be worthwhile for the u.s. to team up there.

of course, no one wants to talk about raising the minimum gas mileage on cars, which would reduce demand and keep prices in check.

and NO ONE wants to talk about how the drop in gas prices seems to be coinciding with the November elections -- for which the republicans (and their big oil friends) desperately want to keep the status quo.

If you really believe that Supply/Demand crap...then you need to get out of your house once in a while and see that just as many cars are on the roads now as have been for the past 12 months...

11. Nope, not sarcastic. I do get out--quite a lot actually.

It is a fact that the largest number of trade-ins are low milage SUVs. Both Ford and Chevy are paying for their marketing efforts.

It is a fact that an EXXON memo said they expected a decrease in demand for gasoline as prices increased so they planned no new refineries.

It is a fact that the public is driving as many cars, but not as far and many are more effecient (see the trade-in remark above).

As a personal note, I traded an SUV @ 12 mpg (needed for a business that failed) for a Nissan Sentra @ 35 mpg. I also traded a Lincoln Mark VIII for a Buick LeSaber (smallest sedan Buick makes). What an Effing mistake there! The Buick is 2000 pounds lighter, has 30% less horsepower and performance but gets 10% less milage! Mark VIII got 28.8 freeway and Buick gets 26.

If Al Gore won -- er, I mean if George didn't get appointed -- in 2000 we'd have the CAFE standards we need.

6. But of course Bill Clinton was to blame

when gas was $1.45 a gallon. Pretty much if it happens under Republicans it's supply and demand, if it happens under Democrats, it's Democrats fault. (Sometimes it's even Democrats fault if it happens under Republicans, like 9/11.)

Yes, I'm very grateful that I'm only paying $2.80 a gallon now. I think I'm going to vote straight ticket Republican over it.

Here, we will raise gas prices to $3 gallon, then drop them a little and all be hero's
for that little price drop.............makes a lot of conservative right wing sense....
