Poll question: "The President is at odds with members of his own party"
That's the song the chattering class is singing these days. We were treated to stories of the boy king hauling his over to the Capitol to 'have a prayer session' with these Republican 'insurgents' who are holding up his 'Forgive me for torturing and renditioning' bill.

What do you think is the better description of the reality?

2. He really has problems
And it's been coming a long time, it's just now becoming more public just how fractured his party is.

5. What do you think about this ......... ?
It isn't a problem within his own party so much as the real world power structure is pissed at how he's fucked up in getting rid of a former insider who was about to poke a stick in the eyes of the real power structure?

That would be Saddam and the fucked up war that we're losing badly.

Tin foily .... but not impossible.

3. Definitely a mixture of the first two options
McCain is genuinely against abandoning the Geneva Conventiions. He's taking it very personally, and who can blame him?

The rest of them, who knows? We do know that the ones up for reelection are desperate to distance themselves from their little tin Jesus in the White House. Much of it may be theater.

4. Voted that the problems are real. I'm getting a sense of a GOP
increasingly clear of obligations within the Bush tangle.

I don't think John Warner would have put his name on that objection yesterday if he had not heard from very deep inside the military that Bush's proposal was dangerous, unreliable, and potentially disastrous for the country. And that it enjoyed very little support.

The 4 high-profile Republicans yesterday knew their celebrity would draw attention to the issue, and that they wouldn't be defying their party's president lightly, that on principle it was necessary to stop Bush on this one.

As I type this right now, the little fool is whining and blathering about how we need torture. He's cranking up the pressure.

I don't think he's going to win this one. He will never again appear on a ballot, and the GOP's brighter lights, such as they are, are going to assume more and more a leadership role in defining the party's agenda from this point forward.
