Strategic Vision is a Repub polling firm. Still, I take nothing for granted. This will be the hardest seat for us to keep this fall. Cantwell will pull through. Klobuchar and Cardin will keep those respective seats on the blue side of the aisle. I'm not sure that we will keep this seat though.

1. I know it all too well
I'm volunteering for the Menendez campaign, but I have to admit that this race is extremely worrisome. Doesn't matter though -- I'm still going to put everything I got into it.

2. Godspeed!
There have been a number of polls in recent years out of New Jersey that appear to be from the Soprano Polling Co, because they have been crooked at best. The polls seem to show a HEAVY GOP bias, then election day comes and the race isn't even close.

It's actually a good thing, because it makes sure NJ Dems get their asses to the voting booth.

4. I agree it is worrisome - even though it shouldn't be
I can't believe that McGreevey is either so stupid or so selfish that he doesn't realize that a media blitz to sell his book 2 months before the election is a really bad idea. (I thought Clinton was bad putting his book out the month before the 2004 convention - and his years in office weren't the sea of corruption McGreevey's were.

Chris Christie's investigation could hurt as well.

8. That's right, I forgot about McGreevey's book
Guy is about as corrupt a politician as NJ ever had.

Menendez isn't corrupt, but he's long been known as your typical NJ political-machine type boss. It wasn't hard for Christie to locate some old handshake deal that he could exploit by calling for a federal investigation just two months before the election. (Christie apparently got the call from the GOP: "Now's the time youse gotta pay us back for gettin' youse where you is").

9. Weird that he thought he could fool
people that he was resigning because he was gay rather than because he was corrupt.

At least from the details in the paper it really seems there is no "there" there in the Menendez accusations.

Quid pro quo, maybe? Do they have Diebold in NJ?

5. Part of the problem may be . . .
. . . people who are dumb enough to think that Kean = Kean, Sr., former NJ governor and chair of the 9/11 Commission.

I kid you not.

7. Yep, imo that's most of the problem
which has me wondering - How many Americans voted for GWB thinking he was GHWB? Even more frightening - How many still think there was only one W?

6. I bring your glad tidings from New Jersey
The biggest problem in NJ, imo, is that so many people think Daddy, a very popular gov, is the one running for Senate and have no idea there even is a Junior. Hopefully that will clear up by election day. In the meantime, breaking today, this ought to muss up Junior's hair a bit.

Democrats question donations to Kean
Horizon gave $13,300 on day of a big vote
Friday, September 15, 2006
BY DEBORAH HOWLETT
Star-Ledger Staff
The same day state Sen. Tom Kean Jr. voted twice to let Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey keep a $40 million tax exemption, he collected $13,300 in contributions for his U.S. Senate race from 17 company executives and their family members.

Kean (R-Union) cast the votes in the final, frenetic day of the fight over the 2005 state budget.

Democrats, trying to close a $500 million budget gap, put up a last-minute bill to close what they called a loophole in the tax that health care insurers pay on premiums. Republicans called it a tax increase aimed only at Horizon, the largest health insurer in the state, and said it would cost the company as much as $40 million.

In party-line votes on June 30, 2005, Kean joined other Republicans on the budget committee and on the Senate floor to oppose the measure introduced three days earlier. The legislation won approval anyway, with the support of the Democratic majority.

On the day of those votes, records show Kean received $13,300 in campaign donations from the Horizon executives, including $4,100 from Horizon CEO and president William Marino and his wife, Paula.

Jill Hazelbacker, Kean Jr.'s spokeswoman, said it was a "total coincidence" the events took place on the same day.

http://www.nj.com/news/ledger/jersey/index.ssf?/base/news-4/115829883967690.xml&coll=1&thispage=1

Update:Menendez campaign spokesman Matt Miller responds:

“Lincoln had a secretary named Kennedy and Kennedy had a secretary named Lincoln – that’s a coincidence. Tom Kean Jr. taking 17 contributions from the state’s biggest HMO on the same day he votes to preserve their $40 million tax exemption is pay to play. Tom Kean Jr.’s latest coincidence shows that he’s not just a hypocrite, but a hypocrite who always sides with big corporations over average New Jerseyans. New Jersey needs a Senator who will stand up for everyone in the state, not just for big corporations and special interests.”

11. Corzine's budget , ticket fixing at the higest levels & now McGreevey
Add it all together and it reminded swing voters what they hate about Democrats.

Corzine did the right thing at the expense of his & his party's popularity. The combination of the ticket fixing scandal--I believe it was the Attorney General, no less (Corzine should have fired her ass) and the triumphant return of Jim (I'm Gay) McGreevy on Oprah have reminded voters that Democrats in New Jersey have a reputation for being slimy weasels. Kean, senior, by contrast was relatively clean for a New Jersey politician.

This is not good for Memendez.

16. True
Kean was relatively clean - except NJ financial status was not what he said it was. When Florio won, he HAD to raise taxes or NJ good bond rating would have been drasticly lowered - making all financing more expensive. (Florio, who is still hated by many, also did the right thing at his and his party's expense.)

12. What a dickweed Codey is for not taking this seat.
Edited on Sat Sep-16-06 06:36 AM by nickshepDEM
It was his, ALL his! Andrews could have easily held this seat too. We're in for a hell of a battle now. Hopefully, Menendez COH advantage will overwhelm Kean and save the DSCC from having to drop millions on this race.

Menendez is the most vulnerable Democrat in the country and I wouldnt be suprised if he loses in Novemeber.

13. Latest version of a Jersey race war.
Codey could easily have won,no question. Menendez will win as well. Not before the desperate Keans work the "illegal immigrants" issue: i.e. we all just hate those Latinos to the bone. They are tying it in to overtaxxed suburban sprawl. They won't get away with it.

14. For Christ's Sake!

When you have a choice between a alleged crook (Menendez) and a fucking Right Wing Christian Dominionist Wacko (Kean, Jr.) the choice is a no-brainer.

Vote for the crook! He only feels he is entitled to steal what you have now.

The Dominionist claims God voided the "dominion over the Earth" contract that He gave the Hebrews in Genesis 1&2, for crucifying a certain Rabbi, about 33 AD, in what must have been a case of mistaken identity.

That contract, once voided, falls to the current-day supporters of said Rabbi, the Dominionists (according to them), of which Kean, Jr., is a member.

And said Dominionists believe in passing a certain law, the Constitutional Reconstruction Act, which would create a Christian Theocratic Taliban. (Really! Go Google SB 2082 of 2004 or HR 3799 of the same year, if you don't believe it.)

And, remember all those "slaves" in the Old Testament?

Well, Jerseyites, you are them! Along with me and every other sorry SOB who doesn't buy that heretical pack of bullshit about Dominion, and the importance of following their teachings about the dynamic young Building Contractor from Galilee!

Wake up, dammit!

Menendez may lie, cheat, steal from you, if he can. But that's just temporary.

Kean, Jr., and his Psychotic Protestant Posse will own you. Literally And your spouses, and asses, and your tools, and your children. Yea, unto the millionth generation! (and ye shall be called Amalakites, FWIW)

Got choice??

Then USE IT!

21. This will get you started
This is a sub-thread
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=203x449427#449468

to a thread about the overthrow of the Missouri Photo Voter ID law.

There is some scary stuff there, spelling out exactly how these guys play the game.

And this is a Cut'n'paste of an entire post (from that thread) which has a bunch of "starter sites" to learn about Dominionism.

"You need to post another thread about SB2082 and HR3799 and their sponsors. Maybe other DUers besides me have never heard of them."

That will be coming quickly. But, there are other parts of this "Handiwork of Heresy" which must be included.

It has taken three years to hunt these folks down, tie 'em together, then sort them out. Until then, anyone wanting to get a headstart could check the following sources.

WWW.Yuricareport.com (good, but not partisan)

15. I just checked that site!! You won't BELIEVE this!
After posting that screed to you NJ voters, I went and checked the site of
this polling company.

I immediately recognized two of them. Brownback of Kansas, and Phill Kline, AG of Kansas. Both avowed Dominionist Screwballs!

So, take a breath, and then worry.

Take the breath, because I'll bet this poll is gamed... Bigtime!

Then worry, because I thought this brand of Religious Zealots was confined to the Heartland, the Buckle of the Bible Belt.

But it's in Joisey, also??

Youse guys better take care up there!
