Hey, pretty good, wouldn't you say?

> "The" story this election isn't the civil war in Iraq, it's the civil war in the Republican party. Front page of the Outlook Section, no less.
>
> I can't help but feel sorry for my old Republican friends in Congress who are fighting for their political lives. After all, it must be tough explaining to voters at their local Baptist church's Keep Congress Conservative Day that it was their party that took a $155 billion surplus and turned it into a record-setting $400 billion deficit.
>
> How exactly does one convince the teeming masses that Republicans deserve to stay in power despite botching a war, doubling the national debt, keeping company with Jack Abramoff, fumbling the response to Hurricane Katrina, expanding the government at record rates, raising cronyism to an art form, playing poker with Duke Cunningham, isolating America and repeatedly electing Tom DeLay as their House majority leader?
>
> How does a God-fearing Reagan Republican explain all that away?
>
> Easy. Blame George W. Bush....
>
> Even when the administration would not give generals the troops they needed to win the war in Iraq, Republican leaders did nothing. When the president refused to veto a single spending bill while the deficit spiraled upward, Republican leaders looked away. And when chaos was reigning in the streets of New Orleans and across the Gulf Coast in Katrina's horrific aftermath, Republican leaders remained mute.

3. Joe has changed dramatically in the last 6 months
Edited on Sun Sep-17-06 12:54 AM by Erika
He's running like hell from the six years of Bush. He may no longer be vested in the congress but he is in his career at MSNBC.

Faux is also suddenly leaning left. They see the writing on the wall.

W has bankrupted this country and engaged war against an innocent country. The results are coming through.

10. but he is also condensending to the Dems----and Pelosi

............But these Republicans have one advantage that Clinton's party lacked in 1994: Their opponents are Democrats. The Party of Pelosi. The party that is so tongue-tied on its best political issue that I still can't tell you where it stands on Iraq. Nor can they explain how they would balance the budget or stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

......That failure to present an alternative vision is in stark contrast with Gingrich & Co., who spent 1994 drawing up a legislative package, a plan to balance the budget and enough position papers to strip an Amazon rain forest.

This year, maybe Democrats can beat something with nothing. As for Republicans, their only chance of survival is blasting the president for mistakes of the past and attacking the Democrats for their failings of the future.

Of course, you GOP candidates can be sure that such attacks will annoy Bush, even though your survival may be all that stands between him and a crazy Democratic chairman launching impeachment hearings. But if you win this fall only to face his stern rebuke next winter, just tell him it was schadenfreude for all the times the White House treated you badly. With any luck, Bush will think you are talking about that Berlin disco that Moammar Gaddafi bombed back in 1986 and then dismiss you like the worthless billy goat he always suspected you were.

21. I.m still skeptical
While bashing the Repubs. He is condemning the Democrats for not having a plan..
I get so damn tired of hearing this..The Democrats have repeated over and over what they would do in Iraq, and many other issues but their message is silenced by the MSM..Say what you want about this network or that network is leaning left..dont believe it..They are still Rightwing echos and that wont change..Just wait a few weeks and that will be confirmed as the election nears.Don't forget who owns these networks.

5. and he socks it to "Republican leaders" also for doning NOTHING!

He's jumping ship with the rest of the rats to save his own ass.

He still manages to insult the Dems and he reminds the reader that the Dems are "running on nothing."

I wouldn't trust this piece of shit as far as I could throw him.

11. "- even if he was defiling the Oval Office at the same time."

......Republican House members and senators always believed that this White House took them for granted. But after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, most of them had no choice but to sulk in their cloakrooms, listen to Debby Boone on their iPods and take it like a man. Bush was a rock star among the party faithful through the 2004 election, so crossing this popular commander in chief was not an option. That's not to say that Old Bulls didn't privately growl about how they were treated better when their old nemesis was still frolicking with an intern. So what if Bill Clinton misbehaved? At least that president found time to personally negotiate terms of subcommittee markups -- even if he was defiling the Oval Office at the same time.

13. Radical Bushies Call Themselves "Conservatives?" Time To Call 'Em On It
Edited on Sun Sep-17-06 01:43 AM by True Blue Believer

I am delighted to see the true Conservatives finally turning against Bushco. I have never been able to understand how and why everyone allows the right wing extremists in the WH and Congress to call themselves "Conservatives" when they are anything but. Being on the right does not equal being Conservative. Was Hitler a Conservative, for example? Few would deny he was a right winger. But a Conservative? And no, I didn't just call Bush Hitler, but if I see a similarity, I retain the right to voice it, even with Bush in power. Something called freedom of speech. That little "paper" Bush edited for us.

No, Hitler was no Conservative, and neither are Bush and his Neocons and religious lunatic fringe, who seem determined to lead this nation down the same primrose path Hitler led Germany. Bush dishonored the 3000 Americans killed in the 911 attacks by forgetting all about Bin Laden and getting nearly as many more US troops killed in Iraq. Why? Why did Bush forget about the people who murdered those 3000 American civilians, leave foot loose, then chase off to start another war in Iraq? Not Conservative, and not smart.

Meanwhile, the Taliban have grown rich off poppy crops, bought their murderous buddies in Al Qa eda all sorts of weapons, and Bin Laden's folks have dug in to await the return of our troops, God help them.

Back on the ranch, we have a few problems of our own. Katrina spoke volumes. Our economy is a wreck, and national deficit are the highest in history. It's a tragedy what these right wing fanatics have done to this country, our world image, especially the torture, which makes me ashamed every time I think our country would not only do such things, but that there are Americans who thinks it's A OK. Then there is the havoc wrecked on our dangerously weakened military and our troops, and to the uncounted innocent civilians killed in Iraq.

Thankfully, Bush has had the same "golden touch" with his party and the future of the GOP. I'm glad to see that there are still some true Conservatives in the GOP willing to stand up to him and his bullying arrogance. But if I were to say I was unhappy to see the Republican party breaking apart, I'd be lying. And that's George's job.

16. Thanks for the Welcome!

Thanks for your welcome. This is a terrific board, but I just never took the time to explore it before. I'm, uh, sorta proud ta meet you too. LOL. Beware though, I tend to be long winded, something a lot of folks complain about. I will try hard to keep my post short and, well, not make too many enemies. I tend to get a little worked up now and then. But it don't last long.

Hope we can be buds.

17. Before "Conservative" became a political title,
those people were called "Republicans."

I don't remember "conservative" being in general usage to describe a political party before Reagan. That may certainly be due to my limited perception.

Since the 60's, "liberal" has been used as a four-letter-word, but I remember "conservative" being used as a description rather than a Political Party, as it is now.

IIRC, Democrats like Senators Sam Nunn and David Boren were "described" as "conservative."

Now, people like George Bush, Newt Gingrich, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity lead something called the "Conservative Party."

They have stolen OUR language. And "conservatives" are the first ones to rail for English as the National Language, even as they destroy it. That's the never ending irony of "conservatism."
