The newly seated Democratic President of the United States asks for and receives 90 minutes of prime time air on all networks and cable stations.
His speech starts something like this:
My fellow Americans, in my campaign, I promised I would report to the nation the true state of our country and what we plan to do about it. My cabinet and I have completed the promised two week review of the state of our nation.
The United States of America is not healthy. Our treasury is depleted to alarming levels. Our military is the least operationally ready than at any time in our history. Our economy is faltering and the least of our citizens are truly desperate.
But as bad as all that may seem, there is one thing that, in and of itself, eclipses it all. Crimes were committed at the highest levels of government. Over the course of the next few weeks I will be directing my cabinet and the government agencies they supervise to release to the media all but the most sensitive documents that show the level of criminal activity that took place. Today I ordered the Attorney General to impanel a special prosecutor to oversee the detailed investigations and to swear out criminal arrest warrants where appropriate, no matter who they may involve - Democrat or Republican or independent - and no matter how high an office they may have held in my or previous administrations.
No one, my fellow Americans, is immune to or above the law.
I see no higher need for our nation and our standing in the world than to restore fully and impartially the rule of law.
These will be the most trying of times for our country. I expect there will be shrill cries and charges of partisan witch hunts. I promise that I will steadfastly pursue those who have sullied our nation or resign my office. At this time, I ask only for your support and understanding.
