Did Webb really say this in the debate today?
"...George Allen didn’t fight in Vietnam. Even the French fought in Vietnam..." --9/17 Meet the Press debate.

Damn, I wish I would have gotten out of bed a little earlier...

Local Democratic group.

Webb has a fetching sense of humor. ;)

4. He said it in response to Allen's "even the French supported Gulf War 1"
Edited on Sun Sep-17-06 11:19 PM by Ninja Jordan
Allen was trying to score points over Webb's apparent disagreement about the first Gulf War. Maccaca just looked like an idiot.

It was kind of funny, although I'm not sure the uber-serious Webb meant it to come off in a humorous way.

edit: typo

6. Webb completely annihilated him
The best line Felix uttered was something along the lines of: "I'm not sure what my position is on this" which he stuttered in reference to the torture/Geneva conventions dispute.

Webb's campaign should lift that line and replay it in a commercial over and over again.

9. I thought Allen basically caved.....He didn't stand up to the challenge
This appearance didn't hurt Webb at all but it probably hurt Allen at least a little.

Then, again, maybe I'm just an optimist.

I thought Webb was brilliant, well, except for the women in the military thing. That was not cool. But the Macaca thing overshadowed that turd of a subject in a big way. Russert nailed him with pointing out Felix voted with Bush 96% of the time and that he voted for the war to support Junior. Devastating.

As I posted below I missed his explanation on MtP because I was reading the paper at the same time. Good to know!

18. Yep....the women in the military thing wasn't very cool....but 27 years
is 27 years.

I think Bush was still sniffing coke more recently then that....

Although he could have been a bit more forceful and clear with his "I don't think that any longer" response.

Of course, I had taped MtP and was reading the Sunday paper while watching it, but he was sorta stumbling through the explanation. Good to know there was an apology at one point. That makes a difference. Thanks for the info.

23. There were more recent comments as well - an article in the 90s
He's not perfect. His comments on Vietnam protesters - even those of us who did nothing other than petition our government to change the policy - are troubling - especially as he can't see the parallel to his being against the Iraq war.

He may though win Virgina and vote for a Democratic leader. He is head and shoulders better than Allen, but the hero worship of some (not you) is a bit much. I suspect that if elected he will be a pretty conservative voice and vote. (I do see why Clark and Kerry who are more liberal support him. They want to take back the Senate.)

12. Probably...he's good and that line's been waiting for weeks...
...they're smart...needed a humiliating 'kill shot'...that might do it.

Remember that Allen has attacked Webb's patriotism from day 1 and they're fighting back with no rules, none. Webb is a decent individual and a writer/cultural philosopher. He's the real thing.

A Democrat saying something like that is just as offensive to me as it is when a Republican says it.

I would agree if Webb's only intention was to imply something like "Even the cowardly French did fight in Vietnam" while Allen wussed out. But it was in response to a statement from Allen about the first Gulf War with the same wording. He used Allen's words and logic (and therefore his french-bashing) against him.
To a certain degree, it's still a little bit of a french-bashing, though.

20. My best friend is a French Citizen.
We laugh at our "local yahoos" as much as they probably make fun of France and The French People.

You know she tells me that French People kind of JOKE among themselves and also think negative stereotypes to giggle about us Americans?

All I'm saying is that "small digs and teases" doesn't have to be malicious in nature.
