Poll question: SO, did President Gore just open his run for '08?
Please discuss!

At first glance, I think that repealing income tax and replacing it with corporate poor-citizen taxes like he proposed with the CO2 tax would be tremendous for the economy.

After all isn't the key to a Strong economy passing the dollars through many hands? Do you see a down side?

1. Have no idea. Al Gore is a great mystery these days.
His speeches to the public over the last 5 years have been beauties, and he's doing the environment one of the biggest favors ever done for it by a human.

But I'm not seeing him aligned yet with money people and advance people. Maybe he doesn't need to jump in that visibly this early.

I'm 51-49 Yep He's In all morning and 51-49 Nope He's Out all afternoon. Nighttimes, I'm 50-50.

2. You said.............
"the key to a Strong economy passing the dollars through many hands"

My take is that there won't be any money to pass around by the time `08 rolls around. I feel sorry for the next president.

I should change my userid to Cynicalfrustratedlady

Has to be better than Pottersville, eh?

3. He won the popular vote before. He can do it again.
He's an intellectual and caring American. What a refreshing change from the W corporatist who could care less about Americans.

15. Not to be doom and gloom,
But sometimes I question whether or not he could do it again. Perhaps against some super-doofus, if an R cantidate more doofy than the shrub is possible.

I know he would take the vote from those of us that are decidedly left, however, I think he's a little too fringe for the old ladies and generally apolitical masses who see the election as a popularity contest. I'm not sure if he's speaking directly to enough voters to take another election. To many people - millions of voters - the 'environment' is a source of income or so nebulous its not a talking point, or theyre just tired of what they see as 'babble'.

This, however, is simply my perception.

8. Gore has the experience, intellect, and vision
Gore certainly isn't of the moment. He's out there everyday. Obama is great. Give him another eight years.

9. I know who Gore is
I mean to say that Gore has a body of work out there that I can judge, and decide whether I agree with his views across the political spectrum. FWIW, I do.

Obama? I don't know WHO the hell he is yet. All I can say about him is pretty much what most people see in him, to wit, he speaks well. I really do wish he'd show me something in the Senate. So far his record seems pretty uninspiring.

19. This moment, you are using to praise Obama
for all the world to see was made possible by the vision, dedication and effort of Al Gore when he championed the internet, empowering you, only to be trashed by the mass corporate owned media for his good deed. They wanted to remain the sole gate keepers to the truth. I guess it's true when they say "no good deed goes unpunished".

20. Obama is a DLC tool
and there's no way in hell the progressives will go for him. I was not a huge fan of Gore in 2000 but I really do believe he learned his lessons, i.e., letting DLC "strategists" run his campaign. I would actually work for and enthusiastically support him in 2008 should he decide to run. Kerry? Not so much.

7. Strong economy
"After all isn't the key to a Strong economy passing the dollars through many hands? "

No. Efficient use of resources is the key. "Opportunity cost" occurs when resources are used in an inefficient manner, when they could have been used for something more worthwhile. "Everybody gets a cut" is old-style thinking.

11. Hmmm, I wasn't thinking everybody gets a cut, but I can see it...
I was more thinking that the people who will spend more by this are the upper middle class and below who would have more available money, driving demand up, no? Circulate the dollars as much as possible before they are offshored by the jet set.

Then again, obviously, I'm no student of economics.

12. Another Take
Efficient use of resources is the key to an efficient economy. Efficiency, as defined by classical (micro) economics, is not necessarily synonymous with macroeconomic "strength" (by which I imagine the original poster meant growth). A country's government may choose less efficient policies that actually increase economic growth (ie, taxing imports such as oil).

Although I'll agree with you that governments are normally very inefficient.

I voted for "he is testing the waters" although there is no evidence that he is running.

I also got allot more out of it than a mere tax trade. I think a CO2 tax would encourage some much needed changes how money is made in this country. It would be a necessary step in taking the profits out of destroying our environment, and consuming valuable resources which are not renewable.

But eliminating payroll taxes is hardly necessary to make such a change. I don't view the payroll tax as something that perpetuates unemployment, nor does it make a pollution tax less practical. More revenue is needed, regardless of how many reductions can be made in federal spending! Republicans hated the Windfall Profits Tax supported by Carter, but I believe deficits and CO2 emissions would be much lower today if it had not been eliminated.
