Bayh: Punish China over trade
The Indiana senator gets a warm reception from union members in Des Moines.

Sen. Evan Bayh told United Auto Workers union members Friday he thinks the United States should impose tariffs on China if the country continues to keep its currency artificially low.

Bayh, of Indiana, who is considering a run for Democratic presidential nomination in 2008, was in Des Moines to speak at the group's annual Community Outreach Program meeting.

His speech hit on themes Bayh has brought to Iowa in recent months - the importance of protecting the middle class.

He said the government needs to stand up to foreign countries with unfair trade policies, such as China. He said China keeps its currency undervalued, in effect making its products cheaper in the U.S. economy and leaving U.S. companies at a disadvantage.

1. Thank you Evan Bayh
At long last, someone is speaking out. Currency is the key to rectifying the trade imbalance situation.

2. I agree 100% about Chinese currency policy
and I wouldn't rule out tariffs as a solution. At least someone is talking about this, but I don't know why it isn't getting more exposure. How long are we going to let other countries walk all over us when it comes to trade?

3. Right. Couldn't be that outsourcing Bayh loves that contributes to the
destruction of the middle class, no it's China's fault. What crap.
