7. A more accurate accounting

Would be state by state voting intentions. There are no national elections being held. I don't doubt that Bush got a bump out of the 9/11 coverage, but those sentiments will soon pass and people will remember how crappy Bush and the Republicans have made their day to day lives.

This rise in Bush's approval should be no surprise since we knew that GOP would get busy trying to prop him up for November.

Regarding the gullibility of the masses, I often think of Mencken's cynical comment.

It says we are about even on terrorism which is bad news for the GOP.

19. We need more motivation

The 48%/48% number is for likely voters. Among registered voters its 51%/42% Dem. That shows we need more of our people to be motivated to vote.

42% of Republicans described themselves as extremely motivated and another 28% described themselves as very motivated. That's 70% put together.

44% of Democrats described themselves as extremely motivated and another 23% said they were very motivated. That 67% total.

I don't like this news because the previous wisdom was that Democrats were charged up for the election and Republicans were angry with their own party and likely to stay home. Republicans now say GOP voters are starting to come home because gas prices are lower. Maybe that's true but I think its more likely that the GOP voters are more aroused by the talk of torture and violence.

I don't hear that many negative attacks on Bush from the Democrats anymore. They seem to have gone back to playing defense. The Democrats are trying to convince the public that they have a plan to make America safer and of course the media is ignoring it.

I don't know why Democrats don't go after Bush's insane plan to prosecute 100 years of wars if necessary to bring democracy to the entire Muslim world. Bush thinks the Muslims will end up loving us after that. Bush is delusional, and his position would be very tough to defend if Democrats went on offense and started attacking it. The idea of Bush's insane plan is the kind of thing that would motivate our base. Bush's plan is something to be alarmed about.

Question 30 of the poll asks: If you had to choose between the following, what should be the primary goal of US policy toward Iraq and other countries in the Middle East?

Establish stable governments, not enemies of the US: 58%
Establish democratic governments: 33%

That question doesn't even add Bush's war desires. Far fewer people would support Bush if support meant a century of wars and all that would be sacrificed. Democrats could take this terror issue away from Bush, but they are still playing defense. We need something to motivate our people now.
