No "pulling a Lamont" in Washington State. Cantwell winning.
Edited on Wed Sep-20-06 09:25 AM by Cascadian
So I voted for Hong Tran in the Washington State primaries. I had to because of Cantwell's misguided backing for the Iraq invasion as well as her pro-free trade views and her inaction of Bush's Supreme Court nominations. I felt I had to send a message. Unfortunately, it has not been the result I was looking for. It is very likely that Maria Cantwell will get the victory. I will vote for Cantwell BUT...it is as far as I will go. I will not send Cantwell money (she already has enough!) nor will I volunteer for her campaign. I won't even wear a button or post a sign up for her.

My vote for Cantwell in November does not mean I am going to support everything she does. I will praise her when she does something right and I will not stop bashing her when she does something that is detrimental to the country and to the Democratic Party like supporting or going along with the Neocon agenda like she has on some issues. So what if she has taken on Enron and Ted Stevens. Great but how about taking on Bush with the Patriot Act and Iraq? Is she going to back Bush on the pending war with Iran too?

I am posting this out of frustration over Democrats like Cantwell for enabling the Neocons further and I am sick of continuing to beat my head against a wall every election year because people keep saying. "Better not vote third party." or "He or she is the lesser of two evils.". Why do we have to go through this all the stinking time? I want somebody who is not going to be a "Cafeteria Democrat". One who is going to pick and choose an issue and fight and not do anything about the other issues. Hong Tran was the complete package and would have made a far better candidate than Cantwell. Hong Tran is willing to take on the Rethugs and not because how much money she has in her war chest. She wants to fight and that is somebody we desperately need in that other Washington.

2. There were several important judicial candidates in the WA primary.
At this point, the judicial races look good with the draconian candidates losing the primary. The judicial candidates were in the non partisan races and on all the ballots. Because there were no real contested dems in the primary, I voted the repub ballot and wrote in candidates on the uncontested races and against mcgavick on the senate. I'd never done that before but it seemed an irritating thing to do, so i did it.

A big issue in the November vote in WA is Initiative 933 which, if voted in, will force property owners to pay other property owners compensation if land use changes say they can't develop their property as they had planned. for example, If my planned development is blocked by by wetlands concerns, then the built out value of my property has been "damaged" by government regulation and under Initiative 933 the taxpayers owe me the developed value of my property to compensate me for the loss.

The language of this initiative is obscure and confusing and the proponents have been very smart about the language and emotional content of their message, saying compensation for lost land value is "only fair". In typical dem fashion the opponents of Initiative 933 talk about "loopholes", an underwhelming and intellectual concept that doesn't stir the blood (IMHO).

For all that we are constantly told to join with democratic forces in our communities, I have found it to be a frustrating experience. Because of my sense of what is happening in the world, peak oil, global warming, etc. I feel disconnected from the arguments and world view of the party democrats I meet. They are still navigating a world that existed 20 years ago.... they haven't shifted to today's reality.

3. You will vote in November though will you?
In my heart, I wished I could vote for Aaron Dixon as he is the best candidate right now still running. I am very VERY reluctant to vote for Cantwell. This is a sad state of affairs when you are almost held at gunpoint to pick only one of the two major parties. More people would vote if there were more true choices.

Cantwell does not deserve my vote but considering that McGavick is pretty close behind and might win the thing, I am going to have to go with Cantwell. :eyes: :banghead:

And if Hillary gets the nomination in 2008.....NO WAY!

8. Of course you had a real choice...
Unfortunately for you that choice was unsupported by the vast majority of Democratic voters!

9. If people would have more choices then more would vote.
By voting for the Iraq war resolution, supporting so-called free trade laws, and doing little about Bush's Supreme Court appointees, people will see how blurred the lines between some Democrats and Republicans are. It is very easy to see. You can highlight the other stuff all you want but when you go against your party's own principles on the other issues, it eventually hurts the party. Plain and simple.

4. As someone who live in Connecticut, I would take Maria Cantwell...
as my Senator anyday of Joe Lieberman. Joe's been not only an enabler of this criminal regime, but he has time and time again condemned his own party for daring to dissent against Bush. Maria Cantwell has never committed such a heinous act and neither has Conservative Democrat Ben Nelson.

I fully supported Maria in the primary and am glad that she will be our candidate this year.
I supported Ned Lamont in the CT primary and am working towards getting him elected. I will vote for him in November. I hope that both Maria and Ned win!

6. It is all about the lesser of two evils
Edited on Wed Sep-20-06 06:12 PM by Cascadian
And it is just wrong. If you support free trade erroding worker's rights, invading any country we deem a "rogue state", doing nothing about Bush's Supreme Court appointees, and the Patriot Act then go and support Cantwell. Our supposed democracy is a joke if we are reduced to such choices. Hong Tran is the better candidate and sadly she has lost. Cantwell is only getting my vote out of spite.

7. Her opponent Mike McGavick is a "Corrupt Bastard" (literally)
Big FBI investigation going on up here in Anchorage involving a bunch of Alaskan lawmakers, and one Washington lawmaker, MIKE McGAVICK and their ties to Veco > http://www.veco.com/

McGavick immediately raced to give back the $14,000.00 donation that Veco gave him this year.. but he's still involved in the ongoing investigation.

Our news is chomping at the bit to report on what they all did.. but the FBI is taking their time in the investigation. (Hopefully they'll wrap it up before the election!!!)

The FBI located shirts & hats hidden in the offices of the scumbags up here that were involved with Veco and they all said "Corrupt Bastards Club"
(they evidently wore them when they met in secret.. )

I sure hope they're staying on top of this story in Washington state..

11. I read all about this...but can't remember where
McGavick came to our little town and, I honestly think I can understand someone pulling down a opposing candidate's signs...NO I didn't...but I sure could have been sorely tempted..they are right on the main drag into town....seems it didn't do him much good, anyway...and his whiny assed voice on the TV commercials turns my stomach...(someone spent a whole lot of money on TV ads)

am facing the same quandary w/ Clinton. My heart will want to pull the lever for Hawkins, but my brain will force me to vote for Hillary.
