Karl Rove Promises 'October Surprise'

In the past week, Karl Rove has been promising Republican insiders an “October surprise” to help win the November congressional elections.

President Bush’s political strategist is also saying that the final two weeks before the elections will see a blitz of advertising, and the Republican National Committee is deploying an army of volunteers to key locations to help the grass-roots effort and monitor the elections. The RNC is offering to fly in volunteers and cover their expenses.

Rove is not saying what the October surprise will be. Asked if he would elaborate and give his thinking about the coming elections, Rove told NewsMax that his take largely parallels what RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman said in a
Sept. 5 NewsMax story.

As for the October Surprise, Rove said, “I'd rather let the balance unroll on its own.”

The previous NewsMax story quoted Mehlman as saying that Republicans will hold their majority in the House and Senate. He bases that conclusion on a recent meeting with his regional political directors, on private polling, and on analyses of individual races.

Mehlman conceded that the House is in a “competitive situation.” In the House, 35 to 40 seats are in play, he said. In the Senate, 12 or 13 seats could change hands. To tilt the balance, Democrats would have to pick up six seats in the Senate and 15 seats in the House.

But, Mehlman said, “I believe that the combination of the relatively narrow playing field, the relatively strong financial position our folks are in and the national party is in, the good turnout operation that we have, the motivation of our base, and the lack of motivation of their base as indicated by turnout in a number of recent Democrat primaries,” will do the trick.

Meanwhile, Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., the chairman of the Republican Study Committee, told the American Spectator Newsmaker Breakfast that even in Indiana, “There is no question that there is public consternation about our progress in Iraq.” However, he said, “Hoosiers want us to come home, but they want us to win and come home.”

When he was with Bush recently, the president asked him, “What do you have to say, Pence?”

“Thanks for being more determined than our enemy,” Pence said.

“I like the way you put that,” Bush quickly replied.

were pounding away, as they should be but are not, on the administrations many, many failures, if they were running ads showing Bush saying that he'd get Osama and pointing out that five years later Osama is still free, if they'd highlight the fact that middle class families are worse off than they were when Bush took office, if they'd say out loud that torture is NOT what Americans do, if they'd mention everywhere that it is Republicans who have been in control of all three branches of government, then no "October Surprise" could have any effect.

All they have to do is get a much ballyhooed GOTV push in the last two weeks, make it real obvious and unmistakable, then rig the vote machines to give them the result they want. When then results contradict the polls, they claim the polls were flawed and the results could be predicted by their GOTV efforts.

One small, carefully deployed little nuke will cause massive unrest around the world, set us into martial law (which allows them to cancel elections) and that will be that. Or, perhaps we'll have some sort of attack over here- nothing major, just enough to put everyone in terror mode again.

Sorry to be so pessimistic but they are not going to give up the house and or the Senate without a big fight and now that rigged elections are hitting the mainstream, they may need to come up with another way to remain in power. Remember who we are dealing with here- they will stop at nothing.

The GOP is terrified about the November elections. By claiming an "October Surprise," Rove can assuage their fears.

And Bush will never "get" Osama. He's a creation of the CIA and son of the Saudi Royal Family. 15 of the 19 9/11 attackers carried Saudi passports. And the bin Laden family helped finance W's early business ventures.

No way does Bush have any intention on capturing Osama...

27. DON'T forget the November 04 Surprise.

Setting aside the questions about voting fraud,there was a surge of GOP support on Election Day, and not all of it was hanky panky. Rove did "get out the base" to an extent that what was thought of as a victory for Kerry turned around during the day.

Again, set aside the factor of voting fraud. The GOP is real good at rallying their troops.

That I think is the October Surprise. GOPers will come out of their respectiuve holes in large numbers.

The issue is whether Democrats can accomplish the same thing in large enough numbers to offset that.

Reluctantly I agree with you. It's not just voter fraud. Rove has an exquisite machine for turning out true right wing religious fanatics. The 35% hardcore Bush supporters turn out 100% of the time, so they only have to steal 2-4% of the vote. However, I believe that this 35% is not as motivated this election. Rove hasn't given them anything. Nothing on abortion, nothing against gays, two wars gone bad, and I don't think the religious wing nuts are going to crusade to the polls so Shrub can torture legally.

Of course an October surprise may entail the promise of some other outlandish promise like....enshrining the ten commandments in a constitutional amendment. That would turn out some fundies.
