New CBS/NYT Poll: Bush At 37% Approval - Dems Lead Repubs 50 - 35

With the midterm elections less than seven weeks away, Americans have an overwhelmingly negative view of the Republican-controlled Congress, with substantial majorities saying that they disapprove of the job it is doing and that its members do not deserve reelection, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll.

The disregard for Congress is the most intense it has been since 1994, when Republicans captured 52 seats to end four decades of Democratic control of the House and retook the Senate as well. It underlines the challenge the Republican Party faces in trying to hold onto power in the face of a surge in anti-incumbent sentiment.

By overwhelming margins, respondents said that members of Congress were too tied to special interests and that they did not understand the needs and problems of average Americans. Two-thirds said Congress had accomplished less than it typically does in a two-year session; most said they said they could not name a single major piece of legislation that cleared this Congress. Just 25 percent said they approved of the way Congress was doing its job.

The Times/CBS News poll also found that President Bush did not improve his own or his party’s standing through the intense campaign of speeches he made and events he attended surrounding the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The speeches were at the heart of a Republican strategy to thrust national security to the forefront in the fall elections.

8. I'm sure we'll be hearing this poll....

all over Fox & CNN as we've heard the Gallup poll repeated (ad nauseum). NOT! I've heard that most in the MSM have been positively giddy while touting the Gallup results.

Gallup's poll was taken through Sunday. This poll was taken through Tues night, so it is fresher data and not influenced so closely by Bush's speech to the nation. What will be interesting to see is if Gallup's NEXT poll gets play if Bush sinks right back down.

but you have to admit that the gallup poll was a definite outlier. no congressional poll i've seen this election cycle has had congress split 48/48. Every other poll I've seen has had anywhere from an 8 point to double digit spread. Can you think of anything that's happened, or that the repub controlled congress has done (other than observe 9/11) that would explain them closing a double digit gap?

With the Iraq fiasco becoming even worse, Katrina, the US national debt exploding, Afghanistan looking more and more like an Iraqi-style defeat, environmental degradation and corruption spilling from the rafters-- what would it take for this 37% to finally "get it"? Bush could probably torment kittens on national TV while declaring himself a die-hard adherent to al-Qaida, and he'd still have a big core of supporters. Come to think of it-- * has probably helped al-Qaida more than bin Laden's wildest imaginations, so in effect he's a sort of de facto ally for them.

37% is the Republican base. Well, actually it's 38%. That means 38% of Americans call themselves Republicans or vote Republican in EVERY election. That's why Bush is always at 38% or so.

Forget Gallup. I know the media talking heads won't shut up about it. Truth is no one cares what they think. Gallup UNDERCOUNTED the Democrats and OVERCOUNTED the Republicans. That's why that same poll showed the Republicans and Democrats tied for Congress. That's why they showed that those who support the war are tied with those against it. It's because they used a sample that had a disproportionate number of Republicans. Case closed.

But there's one more thing I want to point out. The fact that Bush gets 38% consistently goes to show that the Republicans are in some REAL trouble come this fall. That means that Bush gets 38% and the Republicans in Congress get 35% to 40% of the vote WITH THEIR BASE IN TACT. What I mean by that is that the Republicans are saying that they support Bush and will vote Republican and they are still losing by 10 to 15% consistently.

Why?

Because they've lost the independents.

This will be a BIG Democratic year. Mark my words.
