"Chavez: Inside the Coup" Streaming in its entirety on GoogleVideo.

Chavez: Inside the Coup, via Google Video

THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE TELEVISED
DIRECTED AND PHOTOGRAPHED BY
KIM BARTLEY AND DONNACHA O'BRIAIN
IRELAND, 2003
74 MINUTES

IN SPANISH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES

HUGO CHAVEZ ELECTED PRESIDENT OF VENEZUELA IN 1998, IS A COLORFUL, UNPREDICTABLE FOLK HERO, beloved by his nation's working class and a tough-as-nails, quixotic opponent to the power structure that would see him deposed. Two independent filmmakers were inside the presidential palace on April 11, 2002, when he was forcibly removed from office. They were also present 48 hours later when, remarkably, he returned to power amid cheering aides. Their film records what was probably history's shortest-lived coup d'état. It's a unique document about political muscle and an extraordinary portrait of the man The Wall Street Journal credits with making Venezuela "Washington's biggest Latin American headache after the old standby, Cuba."

3. It's a very interesting documentary to watch. It is filled with...
...tension, humor, danger, absurdity, nobility and most of all...hope. It is well worth the time taken to watch. Though this took place in another country with a different culture than our own the elemental nature of the struggle (a class struggle between conservative corporate interests and the people they exploit) will be familiar to you.

5. Just finished watching...
(With a break for lunch in the middle!)

The lies we've heard yesterday and today in the American MSM about Chavez being "crazy" seem like echos from that time in 2001-02. He's not perfect. But it can't be denied how much he's helped to accomplish in Venezuela.

Btw, I caught some of FoxNews' Dayside program today. There was an audience of Americans and one woman from Venezuela. She was defending Chavez by pointing out the literacy rate of 100%, the expansion of health care and opportunity in the country and also asserted how the media of Venezuela is always complaining about him. The audience reflected the lies of our MSM about Chavez and conditions in Venezuela. Sad, but then they were FoxNews participants.

One interesting thing is how last night our government was denying any involvement in the coup of 2002. However in the film, the military loyal to Chavez called into the palace when it was retaken to report that an American plane was at the location where Chavez was taken during the coup. And that they thought that the Americans were going to fly Chavez perhaps to the Dominican Republic. Shades of what happened to Aristide of Haiti, eh?

Thanks again for the posting.

6. Glad you found it useful. You may find this article useful, it describes.
...the monopoly on Venezuelan media and how it distorts the truth or outright lies to oppress the people. Here. Very useful background as those sections of the movie which pertained to media manipulation are likely to be fresh in your mind.

9. I read an article by Human Rights Watch about laws passed to curb media
In 2005 they wrote about a law dealing with anti Venezuelan government reporting. http://hrw.org/english/docs/2005/03/24/venezu10368.htm
Evidently, from people such as Peter Werbe who have visited Venezuela, no media in Venezuela has been stifled.

So, can you give me the names of any of the newspapers in Venezuela that routinely diss Chavez and the government? I did find a web site that listed all the Venezuelan newspapers. But many are still al in Spanish online. I can stumble through translating them but it would help if I could zero in on a few. Thanks if you can help.

10. I do not know the names of the individual newspapers or the...
...channels but at least a few (of each) are mentioned in the documentary. I will include the following snippet from the message I posted in reply to you though:

The five main private TV channels and nine out of 10 national newspapers campaign against Chavez. Golinger reported that the five major TV stations control at least 90% of the market. Demonstrations by opposition supporters have received blanket coverage, while much larger pro-government demonstrations have been ignored.

The article also describes the two different familiar which maintain a monopoly, at least on the television channels and possibly also print media.

Beyond that, I have no other personal knowledge that couldn't be trumped by a bit of searching in Google or WikiPedia.

If you do find more information on the specifics, please PM it to me or reply with it in this thread, won't you?

I'm sure I would not be the only person interested besides yourself.

Thanks!

14. The media can create a persona..........
Edited on Fri Sep-22-06 01:54 AM by springhill
that is totally false. For instance, Bush is this charismatic fun-loving cowboy. Chavez is crazy. Just keep saying it and people will believe it. Just look at the many posts on this board calling him crazy, an idiot, etc.

And what I really find quite interesting is this notion that Chavez is a thug. Bush tries to overthrow his government, and yet somehow Chavez is the bad guy.

7. Kick for just one more recommendation. I don't care about any more...
...than just the minimum to get it noticed on the Greatest page, but I'd love if more people realized this resource was available to them, free of charge.

12. I'VE BEEN LOOKING ALL OVER THE WEB FOR A YEAR ,
to get a copy of that, and without success until now. THANKS! I'll accept it as "pro-Chavez propaganda", and go through it again as critically as I can. But it struck me as being essentially the TRUTH. I watched it non-stop, and just now finished. Later on, I'll try to figure out how to download it to my HD. Suggestions on how that may be done, are most certainly welcome!

I recently got a smartphone (Treo 700p) that handles videos. That'll be my next project.

13. Recommended and kicked. A great film.
Saw this for the first time last night. Watch how the corporate media in Venezuela smeared Chavez and created an "alternate reality" on events.

The growing parallels with big media in this country are chilling. It reminded me so much of the way Fox news or MSNBC plays events to Republicans favor.
