ELECTION '06: Republicans for Torture Unite! (WARNING: GRAPHIC)
From Taylor Marsh (WARNING: EXTREMELY GRAPHIC):

ELECTION '06: Republicans for Torture Unite!

VOTE REPUBLICAN in '06!

Here's the lede. ...and here's the latest from the Democrats (h/t).

But the bottom line is that torture doesn't work. Let's take this one step at a time since not every American is interested in this country and for which it stands, but thinks his or her sorry ass is more important.

Score one for Osama bin Laden and the murderous thugs to which the Republicans are handing the reputation and heritage of this great land.

What Republicans are doing is dangerous, even perilous, for our democratic republic and the fight against terrorism and extremism. John McCain, John Warner and Lindsay Graham, along with every other feckless, stoneless, spineless Republican also just sent yet another message to George W. Bush that he is king. No, emperor, because the bill deal on torture does one very important thing: it leaves all decisions, every last one of them, up to our Torturer in Chief, George W. Bush.

Here are some indispensible links: the bill as it now stands, Agreements on Common Article 3, Agreements on Classified Information, with the LA Times getting it just right: Until Bush took office, the U.S. had no problem defining what is cruel and inhuman.

Snip...

Torture helped us get from 9/11 to Iraq.

And again, for the ignorant and Republican among us: it doesn't work.

It's also un-American. But the Republicans don't care because it helps them avoid the one subject that will lose the election for them: IRAQ. Expect them to be on message: torture saves lives and keeps America safe. If you believe that then I've got some property in Waziristan that a guy named Osama wants to sell you. It's going cheap. All you have to do is sell your soul.

1. I don't think that would bother the hardcore righties who a few decades...
ago would have been members of lynch mobs (okay, maybe currently too).

2. Conyers on "the 'independent voices' in the Republican party"
Snip...

The public needs to re-evaluate the credit it has given to the "independent voices" in the Republican party. It hardly seems like any check was provided on the President's desire to continue mistreatment and torture of detainees.

The Post covers the immigration vote yesterday. Lamenting an ineffectual series of immigration bills and the passage two days ago of the modern day poll tax (voter ID), the Washington Post hopes that the Senate will put the breaks on this bill. Others hope that the House may jeopardize the Senate military tribunal language by asking for more extreme measures.

When we are left hoping that the Republican "moderates" will save us from codifying torture and voter suppression as national policy, we are in big trouble. The urgency for a Democratic takeover in Washington couldn't be more clear.
