NEW YORK - In a combative interview on "Fox News Sunday," former
President Clinton defended his handling of the threat posed by
Osama bin Laden, saying he tried to have bin Laden killed and was attacked for his efforts by the same people who now criticize him for not doing enough.

Wallace said Sunday he was surprised by Clinton's "conspiratorial view" of "a very non-confrontational question, 'Did you do enough to connect the dots and go after Al Qaida?'"

"All I did was ask him a question, and I think it was a legitimate news question. I was surprised that he would conjure up that this was a hit job," Wallace said in a telephone interview.

No, asshole. THIS is the "question" you asked:

Wallace: When we announced that you were going to be on Fox News Sunday, I got a lot of e-mail from viewers. And I have to say I was surprised, most of them wanted me to ask you this question. Why didn't you do more to put bin Laden and al-Qaeda out of business when you were president? There's a new book out, I suspect you may have already read, called The Looming Tower. And it talks about the fact that when you pulled troops out of Somalia in 1993, bin Laden said "I have seen the frailty and the weakness and the cowardice of U.S. troops." Then there was the bombing of the embassies in Africa and the attack on the Cole.

Clinton: OK let's just --

Wallace: May I just finish the question sir? And after the attack, the book says, that bin Laden separated his leaders, spread them around because he expected an attack and there was no response. I understand that hindsight is always 20/20...

Clinton knew that going in, went anyway, then he chewed Wallace up and spit him out all over the FOX news room.

Whenever a Democrat comes out strong and forceful, they break out spin words like "unhinged" and "crazed" to describe what happened. The true content will never see the light of day on the wingnut pundit's shows, only the anger.

They have all the megaphones. They will spin this endlessly. Whatever we do, we have to keep pushing the facts about what Bill said in the blogosphere and elsewhere. Wallace shrewdly had the question worded to indicate he received all the emails with that point. He was trying to get the long speech in before the connect the dots question. Clinton saw it coming and began to answer the 'email' question. If there were a lot of similar emails, they would have come from some organized rovian effort.

It was great to see someone on Faux strongly call them for what they are, a wing of the republican party. Today I tuned in to Faux occasionally, and I seemed to see more Democrats than usual. I think they were trying to be fair and balanced for a few hours, before returning to all right wing, all the time.

You're exactly right. Clinton headed off his legitimate before he got to ask it because he saw what he was doing. So the question BC answered was the "real" question the wingnut emailers wanted answered. He didn't let Wallace-lite spout the talking points, but instead unleashed Hell on him.

I've watched it several times. Watching a Dem with a spine never gets old.
