33. A real freeper would say...
(And I know because my dad is one)
We were discussing the huge profits the oil companies have been making recently, which is a dangerous area to get into with someone who listens to Rush every day.
And I swear to you my dad said, "Good for the oil companies. That's the free market at work."
And the price of gas, it's falling because summer is over. Don't you guys know it happens every year???
I am afraid my dad is not the only one who thinks like this.
It's pretty scary.

I hate it when I see people trying to make valid points but using distorted facts to do so. It does not help our case and only fuels (no pun intended) criticism.

No one should be satisfied with the current gas situation, nor should they feel "that is not so bad". And certainly no one should be giving the administration a pass on what has happened simply because gas prices drop a little.

But to claim that prices were under $2 at this time last year is false and ridiculous. The nationwide average 1 year ago was $2.778. In Washington state, in the Bremerton area, the average price a year ago was $2.789. I am not sure what part of Washington you are from, but I seriously doubt that the prices were under $2.00 anywhere in that state a year ago. I chose Bremerton as an example because their current average price ($2.749) matches closely what you paid today.

See : Fuel Guage Report for more info.

45. In January 2006 the national average price of gas was at $2.18
and in January 2005 it was well below $1.80.....so
stop splitting hair, please. And we do have somne
gas stations here in Vancouver, WA which occasionally
drop gas prices to fight competition.

You can find the data by googling "gasoline prices"
as I did. I was just going by what I remembered, and I was
pretty damn close.

26. ***** Did anyone see Jack Caffety asking about ........
... gas prices going down dramatically and if it will make them more prone to vote for Republicans??

It was on this weekend's "In the Money" show on CNN.

Cafferty stated that they were literally FLOODED with responses, and he said...

"I am proud to say that every single one of them said NO and that they know exactly what's going on"

He read off several of the e-mails (they had thousands) because of it was "Question of the Week"..

The e-mails he read off basically had the same opinion -- that if Rove and Company think that they're buying the b.s. that somehow gas prices just conveniently went down just prior to the mid-terms, then they must really think that the American public is s-t-u-p-i-d"

A lot of people said they knew after the election, they'd be listening to the excuse on why the prices had to go back up.

They all agreed that it was a political ploy.

It did my heart good to hear Jack Cafferty say that every response during the entire week said that they aren't buying the excuses we're being fed about why prices automatically went down!

If it was supposed to be a Rovian plot -- according to thousands responding to CNN, they're more pissed that the administration thinks they're that dumb!

32. Devils Advocate ...
While I agree that the sudden drop in energy cost is highly suspicious I dont agree with the regional conclusion.
Supply sources vary from one market to another.
For fact, I know that the west coast has been disproportianaly effected by the alaskan pipeline cutoff.
Thus one would not expect that the price drop in the west would be as pronounced as the one in the east (look at price in ALaska itself). Its just logistics.
What we need to wonder about is WHY the price is droped AFTER the pipeline was closed. Makes one scratch his head.
Logic tells me that a reduction in supply should have led to HIGHER, not lower prices. Something smells.
As a footnote I read this morning that the pipeline would be reopening soon.
Since prices are already falling with the pipeline closed, Imagine where an actualy free market would price fuel with the added oversupply coming back to the market?
Unfortunatly my guess is that after early November, mysteriously, panic will again overtake the market and although storing the excess will still be the real problem, prices will again climb 50%+ for the sake of Exxons profits.
