Hidden Stinger in Bush NIE release

by Valtin
Tue Sep 26, 2006 at 05:58:14 PM PDT

I was reading the release of Bush's NIE, which he has redacted to make his case that we must "stay the course" in Iraq. But my eyes popped out when I got to the end of it.

Here's the link:
Declassified Key Judgments of the National
Intelligence Estimate “Trends in Global Terrorism:
Implications for the United States” dated April 2006

http://counterterrorismblog.org/site-resources/images/Declassified_NIE_Key_Judgments.pdf

Now, here's the section that bothered me, or "terrorism, it's not just for Muslims anymore":

Valtin's diary :: ::

Anti-US and anti-globalization sentiment is on the rise and fueling other radical ideologies. This could prompt some leftist, nationalist, or separatist groups to adopt terrorist methods to attack US interests. The radicalization process is occurring more quickly, more widely, and more anonymously in the Internet age, raising the likelihood of surprise attacks by unknown groups whose members and supporters may be difficult to pinpoint.

This sinister amalgam is to equate leftist, nationalists, anti-globalization activists, etc., with fundamentalist Islamic terrorism. It assumes such terrorism will occur, and, as such, is a set-up for a crackdown on such groups.

If the suspension of habeas corpus, the spread of state terror through the use of torture, and the labelling of U.S. citizens as "combatants" isn't enough, this quote should remind us of how the government is thinking of handling those who won't follow the Decider's dictates.

This is ominous. I won't have a lot of time to follow this diary tonight, as I'm still (don't tell anyone) at work, but felt this was important enough to get my point of view on it out right away.

2. They must not hang out at Freeper forums.
If they had, they would have seen the guys boasting about their pickup trucks with guns mounted on turrets. Big guns. Those guys are a danger to everyone. And they aren't leftists.

We are the ones searching for the truth. They are the ones trying to stiffle it.

And we all know which side the maladministration is on.

That is a sick find.

It reminds one of Hitler.

3. I remember the wordplay during the crafting of the Patriot Act..
At the time, I asked, what is the official definition of the word "terrorist"?
Long ago, I knew this day would come like a thief in the night. It was inevitable.
The clear and True answer is ANYONE who isn't Republican.

6. The answer is simple...no definition needed. A terrorist is anyone
the "Decide" decides is a terrorist. They can even be a Rethug if they don't follow in lock step.

27. Fiji might have nice weather
but there have been 2 military coups in the last 10 years or so and they have a racist constitution banning the majority Indian population from forming a government. New Zealand may be a better option - just colder weather.

4. This IS pretty huge,....
----The excerpted passage is a monument to "American exceptionalism." The obvious intent is to throw an anti-terrorism blanket over any and every reason for which another people or nationality might object to US military or economic interference. It is the ultimate NAZI permission slip,.... it says "We can do anything we like."

---- It is a foolish leadership which fails to recognize that the rest of the world will not permit this sort of presumptiveness,.... and one still more foolish to think we can stand alone against the rest of the world. But that is the Bush-PNAC junta.

5. I was just telling my sister this today,
That this bill is not limited to foreigners. there's nothing in it that would stop him from declaring anyone he has a problem with (including elected officials and American citizens) as terrorists.

8. Plus with the suspension of habeas corpus it means there is no
right to go before a judge to question a your being held or seized. No judge. No oversight. No due process. Nothing.

7. I have been raving about this.....
if we don't get Subpoena Power in the '06 Election, this Regime is going to squash Dissent over his final 2 years in office....and with the NSA knowing our emails, phone calls, etc...'Leftists' are easy to find.

And just why are all of those Detainee Centers being built?

We cannot let this happen.

Great find, Pirate. And I hope others will see the need to be very, very upset.....and to work even harder to get Subpoena Power!

or articles discussing the building of those?

IMO That would be a good thing to post in this thread.

13. You're right...and no, I don't.
I could google around. I remember seeing something on Link or Free Speech TV about the building of these. I believe it was KBR of Halliburton that had a contract to build them.

Many folks think they are for illegal immigrants...but I don't think CorporateAmerica would go for that. I truly believe this Regime would lock up Lefties. I remember the '60's and '70's. And look what they have done to the young Black male population with these atrocious marijuana laws. It's despicable.

Time for Daily Show and Colbert....I will look around after.....MUST HAVE MY LAUGHS OR WILL DIE! lol.

9. So they can attack Venezuela and assassinate Hugo Chevez
...and steal their oil also. Well, Chevez has gone on record as saying that is BushCo's intension. That may not stop BushCo but it will create yet more opposition here in the U.S. So if that happens, will the U.S. have an insurrection of its own?

18. American dissenters----> Bush's terrorists
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/09/25/AR2006092501514.html">Detainee Measure to Have Fewer Restrictions September 26, 2006, Washington Post

As a result, human rights experts expressed concern yesterday that the language in the new provision would be a precedent-setting congressional endorsement for the indefinite detention of anyone who, as the bill states, "has engaged in hostilities or who has purposefully and materially supported hostilities against the United States" or its military allies.

The definition applies to foreigners living inside or outside the United States and does not rule out the possibility of designating a U.S. citizen as an unlawful combatant. It is broader than that in last week's version of the bill, which resulted from lengthy, closed-door negotiations between senior administration officials and dissident Republican senators. That version incorporated a definition backed by the Senate dissidents: those "engaged in hostilities against the United States."

Can anyone assure us that these are not being built for George W. Bush's perceived political enemies in America?

21. I know a whole lot of folks (me included) who are seriously looking
at living outside of the US. And we're average folks, liberal, not inclined to wear tin-foiil hats, but we have been completely radicalized over the last 25 years, and Bushie is the icing on the cake. We're in our 50's, thinking life elsewhere might be more sane for finishing out the (hopefully) last third of our lives.

Domestic terror: Who's most dangerous?
Eco-terrorists are now above ultra-right extremists on the FBI charts

(you know, hippies)

By Henry Schuster
CNN
Wednesday, August 24, 2005;

Editor's Note: Henry Schuster, a senior producer in CNN's Investigative Unit and author of "Hunting Eric Rudolph," has been covering terrorism for more than a decade. Each week in "Tracking Terror," he reports on people and organizations driving international and domestic terrorism and efforts to combat those.

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Watching Eric Rudolph be sentenced to life in prison this week for his terror bombings, I wondered whether he and his followers represent the future of domestic terrorism or the past. After all, it's been nine years since he bombed the 1996 Olympics. That was little more than a year after Timothy McVeigh bombed the Federal Building in Oklahoma City.

...

Instead, the agency sees a new threat: "The No. 1 domestic terrorism threat is the eco-terrorism, animal-rights movement," said John Lewis, an FBI deputy assistant director and top official in charge of domestic terrorism.

24. The continuing polarization of the American public...
I'm not sure what triggered the thought (maybe it was reading this post earlier and then it just swirled around in the subconscious for a a while) but now I'm concerned that the continuing polarization of Americans by the RWRadicals can (and will?) breed home-grown groups & individuals who will resort to violence.

We already have bombings of Family Planning Clinics, attacks on Jewish and Gay centers and persons, demagogues declaring themselves Cultural Warriors, pastors indoctrinating children to be Warriors of God, and political demonizing of persons/groups instead of honest and sincere debate. Is it a downward spiral that will inevitably end in home-grown terrorism a la Tim McVeigh and the 1996 Olympic Bomber?

If the Democrats should happen to take the lead or gain in the House & Senate, should a Democrat win in '08, should the Religious Right lose out in the political arena, dare we think there will be repercussions by the fringe elements within our own borders?

I'm not one to spread fear, but being alert does not mean being on the defensive.

Edited on Wed Sep-27-06 07:09 PM by creeksneakers2
a security threat. Whether the Internet is a threat or not has nothing to do with whether terrorism is increasing. Its especially hard to explain why the net was included since Bush said only the least amount possible of the NIE could be declassified because releasing more would put a chill on those offering intelligence assessments.

I can think of no other reason for the section at top here and the Internet inclusion except that the White House wants to start building a case for controlling or even shutting down the net.
