Study: Reid spent heavily on consultants during last election

WASHINGTON -- Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid of Nevada spent about $1.7 million on political consultants in his last re-election bid, about a quarter of all his campaign expenses, according to a study released Tuesday by the nonprofit Center for Public Integrity.

Reid won the 2004 election with 61 percent of the vote.

The bulk of the fees he paid to consultants - about $1.3 million - went to the media consulting firm Greer, Margolis, Mitchell, Burns. Much of the money was spent on media buys.

U.S. Rep. Jim Gibbons, R-Reno, who is now running for governor, spent about $100,000 on consulting fees, and more than half of those fees went toward fundraising efforts.
