Tell me what you think.

Do a REAL filibuster. Two or three Democratic Senators actually talking the bill to death until it's time for the break. Don't have to move for cloture....just keep the floor reading "My Pet Goat" over and over again, or reading KO's Special Comments into the Congressional Record.

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington kind of thing.

1. Thinking Outside The Box....
Something our Dem leaders are 100% INCAPABLE of.

They're pathetic little quitters. Not all of them to be sure, but enough.

2. I think a real filibuster is called for
This War Criminals Protection Act goes too far.

What happened to people who believed in protecting the Constitution? In setting an example to shine on the world? WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE????

3. Apparently there are no Dems brave enough, or with enough integrity,
or ethics, or sense of right and wrong that are capable of doing this.

It's like sitting there while a loved one is beaten and raped, and doing nothing. They are all negligent in their duty, and have violated their oath of office.

Dem and Repug alike, they all must GO!

5. I think (but am not sure) that there is no cloture vote needed
I think a UC (Unanimous Consent) resolution was adopted that governs the debate and consideration of the bill. No way to filibuster it. (I hope I'm wrong).

11. you can't put it all on reid
Any Senator could've blocked the UC. None did. Blame shared equally by all, including Feingold, Kennedy, Kerry, etc.

14. DO you not understand that it takes 41 votes?
Edited on Thu Sep-28-06 04:55 PM by WildEyedLiberal
Why are you being so deliberately obtuse about this? The unanimous consent is so beside the point and irrelevant because a filibuster would NOT succeed without 41 votes. You have yet to explain where these 41 votes are going to come from especially after Reid decided to wuss out on trying to rope all the Dems together. You seem obsessed instead with blaming every Democrat - why? What agenda does that serve? Why are you being deliberately naive about this?

Edit because I misunderstood onenote's point, apologies

15. you're missing my point
I'm actually with you on this. My comments are directed at those who blame Reid for making the "deal". That deal was made because there weren't the votes for a filibuster. Even those who supported a filibuster accepted that fact. Anyone who thinks that Reid is to be blamed for the deal (a) doesn't recognize that the filibuster would fail and (b) doesn't recognize that every other Democrat, including those who would've voted against cloture, realized that the better course was to try for the amendments. Can blame be apportioned to those who wouldn't have supported a filibuster? Of course. But to be honest, we don't know who they were and again, its not just Reid.

16. Okay, that is fair
Edited on Thu Sep-28-06 04:55 PM by WildEyedLiberal
I misunderstood your point - I apologize. I suppose where we differ is that I think it was Reid's responsibility to bludgeon the anti-filibuster Dems into a unified group - he is the leader so he should be able to bring the caucus together.

But, I suppose he gambled on the amendments, in the hopes that SOME repigs would have a shred of integrity - a gamble that lost.

18. I think its been fairly well established that no one can bludgeon
the Democrats in the Senate to acting as a unified group. Would that it was otherwise, but I don't think its Reid's fault. Some may call it cowardice, some may call it self-preservation and living to fight another day (when, hopefully, there is Democratic majority in the Senate). WHatever its called, its political reality (as ugly as that often is).

22. How right you are
If only 34 even voted no PERIOD then there certainly was no chance of a filibuster.

Democracy died today.

21. can talk until a vote for cloture
the rules of debate were established but if other senators will support the speaker he'll be cut off when there is 60 votes to end debate(cloture)

20. Both Reid and Feingold were on Schultz' show this afternoon .......
Reid was up first. He said there were NOT the votes to go for the filibuster.

Later on Russ was on. He said the same thing. Not enough votes. Neither would say who.

Russ pointed out that all we need to do is watch the votes and see who's yea and who's nay.

I trust both of these guys (albeit I trust Feingold more).
