This is purely anecdotal, but I think reflective of the overall "national mood" regarding this issue. I was at the pet boarding office/house/pound, whatever you want to call it, to fill out the paperwork for our two cats because my wife and I are going on an overseas trip next week.
While waiting for the owner's tags to be assigned, I ran into a married couple I vaguely know because they belong to our homeowners association: he's a Dentist, she's an Attorney, both working professionals, both I would classify highly intelligent. Turns out they're going out of town, too, and were there to drop off their dog. The conversation turned to the local news; they're planning to build something or other close to our neighborhood that has folks up in arms. I asked, "by the way, do you know how that torture vote in the Senate came out" - I'd been running around and hadn't heard myself.
Blank looks. "Hadn't heard about that," he said (she shook her head negative, also)...and after an awkward silence his face brightened and he said "but what about the crappy call in the OU-Oregon game a couple of weeks back?!?"
There's what I think the "average" U.S. citizen's take is on it - bring American Idol On! And I don't say that with any sense of joy or pride: today's vote is as shameful a one as ever held in the United States Senate. I just wish more of my fellow citizens realized that, and would vote accordingly.
