..... we might well be able to change the larger dialogue.

It is probably true that there's a 'war' in Iraq. Probably Afghanistan, too.

But the whole notion of a 'global war on terror' is no more a war than were the wars on drugs or illiteracy or any of the other jingoistic framings of issues as 'war'.

And if we can stop calling anything apart from real wars 'war' we can fight the issues for what they are - civial and politcal matters.

Make no mistake, there really are bad guys out there who would not think twice to blow one or thousands of us up. But they are not a army of a state. They are radicals with a political agenda. Blowing shit up will do nothing to stop the movement, even as it kills a few of them.
