So, my husband and I called Landrieu's office
this morning to ask for an explanation as to why she voted for this terrible torture bill. The woman on the phone said Landrieu thought the amendments would pass and congress would have "oversight". (Yeah, just like the Iraq war.)

:eyes:

Well, I guess she was wrong. The amendments didn't pass.

Does anyone know what was voted on first? The amendments or the torture bill?

I will follow up with a letter to her.

2. Landrieu = D I N O
She wanted oversight on torture?

Let me repeat that: Torture isn't wrong if the Democrats have oversight? WTF?!?

That is disgusting on so many levels I can't even finish this post.

10. I know I should be used to it by now, but I still can't believe this shit.
I really have lost all hope for the Democratic Party. I'll still vote Dem, but this is simply too much. I'm convinced something very slimy went down behind closed doors. Bribes and/or threats is my guess. But if that kind of thing can make people defy their own sacred Constitution, this country is truly screwed.

17. At some point... isn't enough going to be enough?
As I said in another thread, this year I plan to vote a straight Democratic ticket right across the board. I thank a benevolent universe that I have the likes of Ted Kennedy to vote for... he makes this easier than it would be, I can tell you. I will do everything in my power to see that the balance of power in both houses of Congress shifts, despite what I think of most of the people who govern there. I will watch carefully to see what transpires in the two years leading up to the Presidential elections.

If nothing changes, and our country is still heading down the toilet, despite the shift, or if the DLC gets its way, and a candidate of their choosing is nominated, the 2006 election will be the last time I vote. I will just assume my vote doesn't count, whether or not it is counted. At some point, we have to listen to our consciences... we have to be able to live with the consequences of our votes or come to grips with the fact that they don't count (whichever we decide is true).

Yesterday's vote on that Torture Bill was as big a watershed for me with the Democrats as Katrina was with me for the Republicans. At some point, something has got to give, and I feel I will know what that is something after the November elections.

21. I'm with you.
This is all starting to look like an exercise in futility. When you're trying to save people from a burning house and they keep running back in, it's time to get real and save thyself, at least from a lot of needless aggravation. Maybe the country, including our Dem leadership, has gone insane. Matter of fact it's really starting to look that way. Well arguing and fighting with crazy people, who refuse to get help, makes no sense and just drags one down to the level of the lunatics. I've got better and safer things to do. I don't know why I'm still posting on DU, except that being here and participating is a hard habit to break. I really believe my activist days are over. But perhaps things will look better/different on another day. November does mean everything.

20. Because Harry Reid is incompetent.
He released those votes after his sell-out unanimous consent agreement which foreclosed any chance of a filibuster.

22. It is just unbelievable.
After all these years of cutting draconian deals, selling us down the river, and then getting screwed, they keep falling for the same old Rovian ploys. I GIVE UP!

4. The amendments were voted on first.
And the Dems supposedly cut a deal that they wouldn't filibuster if the amendments would be presented for a vote.

When all the amendments failed, Landrieu could have then voted NO.

I think you and your husband were lied to. I'm not surprised coming from Landrieu's office.

5. Well at least your state has a decent election system
I wish all states had some sort of instant runoff. Then you know you could vote 3rd party without enabling the republicans. And if your candidate doesn't win at least you know we could try. It's not a bad system

14. I wouldn't go that far.
Not when you have 12 Democrats and 2 Republicans running for William Jefferson's seat down there. Perhaps if we could, you know, show some self restraint and not have every fucking registered Democrat running for office down there, then it'd be a good thing.

18. any 3rd party candidates running?
Edited on Fri Sep-29-06 02:18 PM by LynneSin

Perhaps a variation where each party could send one candidate to the ballot and that's for any of the major 3rd party groups. I think some folks would feel less pained voting democrat if at least they had a chance to first vote for a 3rd Party candidate

6. The amendments
went first then the vote on the bill as it was. That is the part I don't understand, if they voted for the amendments it meant that the bill was lacking so why did they vote on the bill if it was wrong? Even if they gain control there is no way that * is going to sign on to a new bill the only way to change it now is to bring it to court. That will take time while who know what can happen and if we lose one member of the Supremes it's over.

Sorry, they don't do honesty. Only liberal radicals believe in telling the truth and being upfront. Losers.

I thought the amendments were voted on first, but I wasn't quite sure when we were speaking to her office. Time for another call!

PS: Stupid bitch!! I'm really sick of her and I think I'll let her know that! Oh, and the entire state is now voting on touch screen machines. We have a state election tomorrow, I'll let you know how that goes.

19. Ask Landrieu if she and her staff think you're stupid. Amendments are
passed or failed BEFORE the vote for the bill comes up. Once the bill is passed FORGET ABOUT IT - hell and the Devil is not going to change it - you are stuck with it unless you get a Sunset provision like Byrd tried to get on the torture bill.
