Foley's Departure Screws Florida GOP
Foley's Departure Screws Florida GOP
By Paul Kiel - September 29, 2006, 4:09 PM
Until his abrupt resignation today, Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL) was the clear favorite to win reelection this November to represent Florida's 16th district.

That creates a headache for the Florida Republicans. According to state law, they can pick a new candidate -- but Foley's name will stay on the ballot. Here's the relevant statute:

In the event that death, resignation, withdrawal, removal, or any other cause or event should cause a party to have a vacancy in nomination which leaves no candidate for an office from such party, the Department of State shall notify the chair of the appropriate state, district, or county political party executive committee of such party; and, within 5 days, the chair shall call a meeting of his or her executive committee to consider designation of a nominee to fill the vacancy.... If the name of the new nominee is submitted after the certification of results of the preceding primary election, however, the ballots shall not be changed and the former party nominee's name will appear on the ballot. Any ballots cast for the former party nominee will be counted for the person designated by the political party to replace the former party nominee.

3. Isn't This Similar To Texas?
What was that guy's name in Texas, the one who had to remove his name from the ballot so they could campaign for some write in candidate?

What was his name again? tom something.

7. Um, We FL Voters Were Screwed
Between Jebby, Harris, dangling chads and Diebold, not to mention the way our districts have been convoluted to favor repukes, we're pretty much hamstrung. And they've removed the amendment calling for non-partisan redistricting from our ballot!

There are plenty of obnoxious pugs down here (many of them rich, retired transplants from elsewhere), but not all of us are shit for brains voters!!

9. Ginsberg, a DISGUSTING re-thug said that the area in question....
...is not a "red" area or a "blue" area, that it's very 50/50 and that this is nothing but great news for Democrats -- so it can't be all bad?!?!?

GOP -------->

Oh.. and "Jebby"? EWwwwwWWWwwww... that a-hole doesn't deserve a cutsie nickname.

13. His district is not that bad.
He has some fast growing counties like St Lucie, Martin and Palm Beach. Most people moving in are well educated yankees. Its just a bit north of me (im in Wexler's district), its not loaded with wingnuts.

14. That's what I'm hearing. I guess it's a win for the Dems, although
it's too bad it had to happen like this.

6. I bet that law gets changed sooner than the felon purge there.
Probably not in time for November, but I can see them taking care of it after that...and leaving their demonstrably faulty felon purge in place.
