Citing Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean's honesty and courage in taking on tough issues, Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson gave the former Vermont governor his endorsement on Friday via a teleconference. in turn, Dean, who spoke from his campaign headquarters in Wisconsin, complimented Anderson for his courage in tackling unpopular issues. "Mayor Anderson is a progressive light in a state known for its conservatism."
Anderson reminded Dean that when he came to Salt Lake City last year and spoke in opposition to the war in Iraq, many people dismissed the candidate as unpatriotic. While other Democrats were supporting President Bush's reckless foreign policy, Howard Dean alone had the courage to stand up to the president, to the media and to public opinion, and to tell the truth," Anderson said.
"He adamantly opposed the policy of pre-emptive war and criticized the president for not cooperating with our longtime allies. Now, confirming Gov. Dean's concerns, current and former State Department officials testified to Congress this week that our nation's poor image abroad would take years to repair," Anderson said.
The Dean endorsement is the latest way Salt Lake's globally thinking mayor continues to act locally. On Wednesday, he called for support of the proposed National Low-Income Housing Trust Fund now before Congress.
