They're trying VERY hard to reframe Foley as a Democrat dirty trick
orchestrated to hit after the primaries and right before the general election. Not what Foley admittedly DID, but what political hay the Dems are making of it.This is the major Sean Hannity and Rush talking point, believe it or not. They probably went right there because that is what WOULD have happened had this been a Democrat. Everyone knows we are just not as organized in political gamesmanship as they are and this is just a lucky break for the Dems that this broke when it broke. It WOULDN'T have had this unfortunate political timing for the R's if the Republican heads had done the right thing when they first found out. I don't know if they realize how repulsive they are making themselves sound as they speculate about this.

1. That's exacly what Foley & his pals did two years ago
when the question about Foley's sexual orientation became a campaign issue. They claimed it was all a plot by the DEMS

Sexual orientation a private matter, U.S. Rep. Foley says

May 23, 2003

With rumors spreading about U.S. Rep. Mark Foley's sexual orientation, the Republican U.S. Senate candidate summoned reporters Thursday to address the issue.

Then Foley said he would not discuss it.

"I'm declaring today that I have a right to privacy, like anyone else in this country," Foley said in a 30-minute conference call. "The fact that I'm not married has led many people to speculate, but I'm not going to be dragged into the gutter by these rumormongers."

Foley, a five-term congressman from West Palm Beach, organized the unusual conference call after an alternative newspaper in Broward County reported this month that it believed Foley was gay.

That story spread to other gay-oriented publications, and Foley said he wanted to be "proactive" before a general circulation newspaper, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, published an article on the issue.

Foley is running for the Senate seat held by Democratic presidential candidate Bob Graham. Unlike some other prospective candidates, he says he will run for the Senate even if Graham drops his presidential bid and seeks re-election. He said his private life has no bearing on his candidacy.

Foley blamed Democratic activists for spreading the rumor to try to derail his campaign and rounded up prominent Republicans to support him.

"Liberal Democratic activists have reached new levels of hypocrisy," U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay said in a statement. "The underhanded rumormongering campaign they've launched against Mark Foley is despicable."

5. You could make a strong case for Gay Marriage right now
I want all the gays out in the open and happily able to settle down if they want to with other gay adults. That way when someone has deviant behavior, it will be easier to spot and to report on. All this closeted stuff is really bad for everyone.

8. This is what happens when you never learn to express your sexuality
in appropriate ways. Then you end up with deviant behavior.

There is nothing wrong with sex, heck we wouldn't even be here if it wasn't for sex. But when you are told from childhood to repress your urges and that sex is dirty, then you end up with men like Foley.

It seems the entire Repug leadership has some major issues.

2. So, the only crime here is talking about it?
When it can inconvenience Republicans? Well, they could have talked about it last year. Or five years ago. We Democrats would have been fine with that.

3. The records were given to the FBI back in July
They could have investigated before the primary. They chose not to, probably with some prodding from the * admin and the RNC.

4. We're a bunch of sorry low lives all right!
Imagine! Bringing child molestation to the fore front when it might be inconvenient for the GOP! Perhaps we should have asked them for permission? As a matter of fact, it appears Mr. Hastert had at least a year to address this issue, perhaps longer, depending on whom you choose to believe. Obviously it was never going to be timely and the republiclowns were going to ignore this problem forever and cynically allow this predator to chair the very committee tasked to address this very problem!

They may take a flying leap, the lying, hypocritical SOBs. They wonder why I call them republiclowns?

The Republicans let this happen by being greedy and corrupt.

10. I wish I could agree
Wow, Gman, after these past six years, you certainly have a whole lot more faith in 'the people' than I do.

All I've been hearing is every Republican practically spinning their wheels OFF, trying to diminish every aspect of this twisted little affair.

He's gay.
They're just 'naughty' emails.
The boy was old enough to consent.
The Democrats cooked this up to make the Republicans look bad so close to elections.
Barney Frank, Ted Kennedy, Barney Frank, Ted Kennedy.

Seems to be working so far.

22. Prior to 2001 I always said I had complete faith in the good
Edited on Tue Oct-03-06 05:31 PM by Gman
common sense of the American people. But I have seriously questioned my faith over the last few years. I find that my faith shouldn't be shaken as badly as it seems because Kerry won Ohio and the election so people did come through with common sense.

In any event, molesting teenagers cannot be spun. I refuse to believe this country is so far gone that they will be fooled by the spin about pedophilia. I just don't think people will be swayed.

Check me on November 8.

14. I think the GOP fed this story to ABC.
I think they fed Foley to the wolves. The media's talking about Foley and not about the kind legislation being made on top of the Hill.

They GOP pulling this now makes it look like Democratic leaders knew something and held information for political reasons. It gets people to stop thinking about Iraq and possibly Iran, and it also makes them think about improper sex involving our leaders. ..I don’t know how many times Monica was mentioned yesterday.

15. Easy answer to "DemocratIC dirty trick":
Would Republicans like the Democratic leadership in Washington to ignore the facts, as they did? Someone has to look out for the minors under our supervision instead of looking out for their own political fortunes, and it looks as if the Republicans are not up to the job.

16. The Dems shouldn't even engage this RRR talking point at all.
It's a matter of right and wrong and power and lack of power.

That diverts the debate from the partisan angle and puts the RRR on the defense.

This is where the RRR has it all over our side, they bring the message down to it's simplest level.

Like it or not, we need to do the same.

And, btw, Democrat is a noun, Democratic is an adjective. The adjective is properly used in the OP subject line.

I forgive spelling and grammar mistakes for the most part, but this one I can't deal with at all.

17. It won't work, CREW gave the FBI these emails on JULY 21, 2006!
Edited on Tue Oct-03-06 08:25 AM by ShortnFiery
Hell, the FBI can NOT be trusted to act as anything other than than Bush-Bot RNC stooges since they ALSO failed to act on the information provided by CREW.

What The Democratic Leadership of The House needs to do is DEMAND an independent investigation.

The FBI dropped the ball by not even conducting a cursory inquiry into these emails during July-August-September. Surprise Surprise Surprise. :eyes:

NOW, it's the FOX watching the hen house to TRUST the FBI to conduct a non-partisan investigation. Most likely, because they are embarrassed by CREW, they will go on a witch hunt to dig up dirt on Democratic Representatives completely separate of Foley's Sexual Predation.

In Bush-World, all the intelligence and national law enforcement agencies are merely surrogates of The Executive Branch and The Republican Congress.

The only way to have a FAIR investigation of this matter is to demand the conduct of an INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION.

19. It appears the Re pubs "got caught with their pants down" and
now they are trying to blame the Democrats for taking advantage of them and the situation.
Well, I guess you could say, "what goes around, comes around". Oh, and throw in a little honest outrage by Democrats, over this hypocrite congressman, who couldn't control himself sexually around young boys, and the Republicans got what was coming to them. How could some re pubs not known about this guy?

20. Oh no! Playing politics!
Why, it positively gives those shrinking violets Hannity and Limbaugh the vapors to think of someone playing politics with a scandal! Dearie me! Don't those mean old Democrats know that you're supposed to play politics with things that don't matter, like the so-called war on terror and alleged homeland security? The Foley Affair is about a Republican's political career, for gosh sakes! Have the Democrats have no shame, at last? Couldn't they just let the man, a callow youth of a mere 52 years, gone on propositioning 16-year-olds? Fie on the Democrats! Fie, I say.

Careful with the manufactured outrage there, Mr. Hannity and Mr. Limbaugh; it's known to be high in PCBs.

24. ABC did all right
They covered the Repuke spin yes they did.

But they kept cutting over and over and over to other Republicans who are mad about this and were calling for Hastert's head like the Washington Times.

I always thought that paper was a rubber stamp shill rag for the Repukes.

Maybe I was wrong, well nah but they had their moment.
