News Advisory – Kucinich responds to Statements by CIA Director Tenet
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 7, 2004
George Tenet’s statement contradicts the Bush administration. Bush administration officials have tried several times to lay blame for the failure to find WMDs in Iraq on the intelligence community. Various Bush administration officials have made clear allegations that Iraq was an imminent threat:
"Simply stated, there is no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction," said Dick Cheney on August 26, 2002.
George W. Bush referred to Iraq as a “grave and gathering danger” on September 12, 2002 before the United Nations;
"We know for a fact that there are weapons there," said Ari Fleischer on January 9, 2003;
"We know that Saddam Hussein is determined to keep his weapons of mass destruction, is determined to make more," said Colin Powell before the United Nations on February 5, 2003. In that same statement, Powell warned of the “sinister nexus between Iraq and al Qaeda.”;
"We have sources that tell us that Saddam Hussein recently authorized Iraqi field commanders to use chemical weapons," said George W. Bush on February 8, 2003;
“Intelligence gathered by this and other governments leaves no doubt that the Iraq regime continues to possess and conceal some of the most lethal weapons ever devised," said George W. Bush on March 17, 2003.
Tenet’s statement clearly contradicts the allegations and dire predictions made by the Bush administration about the threat posed by Iraq. Further, Tenet has denied that the failure to find weapons of mass destruction is the fault of the intelligence community.
The Dennis Kucinich for President campaign has released a detailed report about the facts surround the missing weapons of mass destruction. That report can be found here:
http://kucinich.us/DennisKucinichWasRight.pdf.Since September 2002, Dennis Kucinich has stood against the rhetoric of fear and manipulation put forth by the Bush administration of the threat posed by Iraq. He is the only candidate in the race to vote against the Iraq War Resolution. Tenet’s statements further underline the fact that Congressman Kucinich was right about Iraq in 2002, and he is right today.
