What Al Gore could do.
First of alll Let me say that I Like the Idea of Bill Richardson on the Ticket more than any other. But if Al is ever gonna be President, he needs to rengage.

A Kerry Gore ticket is pretty damn interesting. I think it puts FLorida and Tennessee in play.

There is no reason for Al to take the #2 slot again but here is the interesting thing>

The Rpukes would argue that he is just a tired old retread from the past...but they can't do that without bringing up FLorida and the fact that * lost the popular vote pretty convincingly. Both work to the Dems advantage.

Upside is that Gore could run again in 2012 if Keery wins and 2008 id he loses.
There is no real downside unless he is eyeing a cabinet post. But why would you want to be Secretary of State when you could be VP?

My question is would he be better than Graham/Edwards in trying to pull a SOuthern State or two?

1. No way
Running for VP 3 times spells L-O-S-E-R.

I'd prefer Gore stay an elder statesman and not run again.

3. I don't completely disagree but
He ran twice for Veep and won
He ran once for Pres and "won"

Kind of hard to call him a loser with that record.

Maybe spin it as loyal servant and angry about Bush (taking up Dean's anger) and it might work.

4. What makes you think VP is such a desirable position?
It makes a nice stepping stone to the presidency, but that's about it. As a job for a person who actually wants to make a difference, it doesn't offer much power beyond name recognition (which Gore already has) and the ear of the president. Frankly, I think Gore felt stifled by the vice presidency and the shadow of Clinton, even throughout his own presidential campaign. I imagine he likes his role as an elder statesman better, and it certainly seems to suit him better.

18. No. The public is already 'programmed' to dislike him.
Years and years of media slurs and lies have done their damage. Gore on the ticket would totally drain attention from Kerry (or Edwards), and the media would concentrate solely on slamming Al Gore. He obviously lacks the teflon to withstand this, and teflon can not be acquired, especially after adulthood.

By 'public' I am referring to the 10-15% apolitical voters, who aren't up on the issues, but typically decide the elections, anyway.

5. No way
No way. No way. No way. How can Gore go from winning the popular vote and almost the whole election to being Kerry's second-in-command.

It would be embarrassing.

8. Embarassing?
Ha if it help beat the idiot who care. Again I am a Richarson fan but I don't see the downside of Al running. Not gonne happen but I think its at least intriguing...certainly better then hearing all the Dean folks whine.

7. If Kerry Wants to Throw the Activist Wing a Bone
and doesn't want Dean or Clark, he could do it by choosing Al as Veep. It would be strange, but there are benefits to both candidates.

Al has managed to become an establishment politician who is capable of effectively running against the establishment. He would add excitement to the campaign and would be an effective hachet man against Bush so that Kerry can stay "presidential."

Al could position it not so much as a desirable move for him but something to unify the party and for the good of the country.

The more I think about it, the more concerned I become about Kerry's VP pick. There's a problem with the base, and I don't know if Kerry is going to see it in time to address it.

9. Don't think Gore would ever do it
And if he did it would unfortunately look like this:

"I'm not willing to avenge the atrocity that was committed against me in the 2000 Election, I have no faith that the American people would choose me to be President against Bush, but how about I hitch my wagon to whoever the Dem nominee is and maybe I can get my old job back?"

That being said, I do hope he would be picked for a high-level cabinet position.

10. I disagree.
"it's not about me.....We had a surplus and * gave it away to the rich and to fight a war which can not be justified.

I've won three national campaigns and there in no more important one than this one. It's not about me....It's not about the past....Its about the future".

11. Kerrys own words-
Edited on Mon Feb-09-04 03:52 PM by tobius
“I respect Al Gore.  I worked with him in the Senate, and I endorsed him early in his hard fought campaign for the presidency four years ago.  But, this election is about the future, not about the past.  I have the experience and the vision to reverse George Bush’s radical agenda and put America back on track on my first day in office.  This election will be decided by voters, across the country, beginning with voters in Iowa and New Hampshire.”- Dec 2003

One more thing, will his VP agree or disagree with his 3 Iraq war votes?

12. What Al should be doing
is getting the various factions within the party to kiss and make up. He might be the only one that can do it.

17. Most likely Kerry's backers fired Gore
Edited on Mon Feb-09-04 04:47 PM by tinanator
In my opinion the decision makers who pulled the plug on Al's return had Kerry in mind all along. Cant imagine why, literally, but it would seem to fit with events. Scratch that, I imagine that Iraq was a predominant consideration. :)
