Webb-Bush: There's More to the Story
Background on Webb-Bush

A lot of people think Jim Webb may have overreacted to the President Bush when he asked about his son Jimmy at a recent White House function.

I've gotten a tip on the background to this confrontation, and it appears that Webb may have under reacted.

As President Bush is well aware, a couple of weeks before this dinner the tank riding next to Jimmy's in Iraq was under fire and three marines died.

My sources are telling me that the way President Bush approached Webb with his tone, it appeared he was asking the question of how Jimmy was doing in a mocking manner, while he was certainly aware of the tragedy that had hit his unit a few weeks earlier.

(snip)

http://notlarrysabato.typepad.com/doh/2006/11/nls_exclusive.html

This story is also discussed at:

http://www.firedoglake.com/

Is this true? Let's consider a little of what we know of Bush's reaction to other parents of servicemembers: several months ago, an article appeared in a military newspaper, concerning Bush's meeting with the mother of a soldier who'd been killed. I think parents of fallen servicemembers automatically get to meet with Our Leader for a few minutes. This mother was tearfully telling "Mr. President" what a wonderful person her son had been, and she ended by saying "He would've had a wonderful life." Whereupon Bush said to her, "How do you know he would've had a wonderful life?"

Heartwarming, wasn't it?

Considering this earlier account, it seems to me that the story of Bush asking Webb in a mocking tone "How's your son?" would be right in character. I believe the above account of the Webb-Bush conversation.

1. Jesus H. Christ... I can picture little Caligula doing a "please don't kill me"
Carla Faye Tucker style mocking routine on Webb. That little shit's only weapon is selfish sarcasm.

Man, what an asshole that Monkey is.

Sigh! Now you've insulted assholes. All assholes that I've

If you don't get it, Bandini was a manure company in S.
Califonria. Their TV commercials featured a mountain of manure
and some disgusting sports on that mountain.

40. Wow, I didn't think it was possible.
I didn't think it was possible for Bush to be that heartless, this must be wrong, but the reminder of his actions towards Carla Faye Tucker made me reconsider. I mean, come on, even if you think the death penalty is legitimate, you can't excuse his actions towards her. She was asking him as a fellow Christian, she was 'Saved,' just like him. He could have said, "No, though it pains me, I must do my duty to my state as I see it." He fucking mocked her pleading. Wholly reprehensible. With that in mind, it seems plausible that he did the same to Senator Webb. He is a disgrace to our country and to human dignity itself.

You are very correct - he does this a LOT, more than the press ever seems to notice. He says many things coyly and carefully, almost daring to be caught in the truth. He laughs at his country, his people, and the world, with what he can get away with.

It is most interesting to review some of his past statements in context.

97. I don't think that's it.
I don't think Bush feels sympathy for those not lucky enough to have a powerful father to conceal their crimes. I think that Bush took pleasure in executing people. I think he pardoned Lucas at the request of his Attorney General. Lucas was used as a patsy by the state of Texas to close cases that were posing difficulty for the state attorneys.

96. Yeah, I've read about that.
My theory is that someone close to Bush asked him to commute, like, say, his father. I have no idea why. It is important however to note that Lucas confessed to over 3000 murders. I don't find it likely that he murdered anybody. There is no evidence connecting him to any of the murders. I have a book called 'Everything You Know is Wrong' that contains an essay by journalist Brad Shellady. Shallady claims that Lucas was used as an excuse to stop investigating difficult cases by pinning them on him. Lucas claims that he killed his mother in self-defense, but they would not believe him. He was coercing into cofessing to that murder, but so he confessed to others as well. He was treated preferentially; the police rewarded him by taking him out to eat from time to time. They even went so far as to leave him completely unattented at an airport. Now that I think about, the request to pardon him probably came from the state Attorney General. Lucas was so useful as a demon that he was indespensable. An interesting insight into our justice system.

And one time I posted how I would like to use THE four-letter word (besides "bush," that is) but didn't want to because I didn't want to go that far. Another DUer responded - "well, then, I'LL do it for you" followed by F-words screamed out in caps.

Now, of course, I'm so disgusted with him that I can let fly with the best of 'em. Hey, let's call him what he is: a little FUCK. A VERY little FUCK. Shrinking in stature by the hour.

123. I come from a long, rich history...
Of very creative use of epithets. I was a roadie in the music business, you see. We tend to use colorful turn of phrase, from time to time. When we aren't in our hotel rooms on nights off, drinking herbal tea and reading the Gideon's Bible that is so thoughtfully provided in every room. ;-)

That said, I have gotten away from using such words. It just doesn't go down well at the local food store, you see. "Gimme a fuckin' pound of that motherfuckin' ground chuck, asshole!", while pithy, doesn't get you great service at the butcher counter. Sadly. But in the case of Dear Leader, I am only good for two, maybe three acceptable sentences, before I lapse into my former evil ways, and proceed to use verbiage that causes Rustoleum to unbond from any nearby metal objects.

If Dear Leader was not Dear Leader, he would be a garden-variety jerkoff. Probably the local drunk that gets beat up a lot. Or the village idiot, wearing a Radio Shack fireman's helmet with a red light on the top, dragging a wagon around town behind himself and mumbling a lot.

128. Hey, so did I!
Maybe you were a roadie at some of the concerts I covered. :D

I remember a good rule established by a fellow female broadcaster - no swearing once you set foot in the booth. Wallow as much as you feel like in the newsroom or the program director's office or gossiping in the bar after hours or whatever. But once you were inside that on-air booth, you were clean as a whistle.

In our house, one of the main guidelines with the kids has always been - "if you act like a jerk, you're gonna be treated like a jerk." In bush's case, he acts like a jerk, so he's DESCRIBED as one. The best we can do as far as treating him like one came on November 7th, and hopefully, on the day he's IMPEACHED and REMOVED FROM OFFICE. And I'll STILL be hurling epithets at him, with all my heart.

The smartass "that's not what I asked you" was inappropriate. A more astute person would have responded: "Yes. We all want our troops home. We just need to work together to find out how we're going to bring them home. And when."
But not Bush. He had to be arrogant and act the tough cowboy.
That act is tired by now.

9. this was my take on Bush's state of mind
Because Webb had dinged Bush a few times in the campaign, I assumed that Bush asked him about his son just to taunt him. Like "I sent your son over there to that hellhole, you sucker." Bush went for the sore spot and rubbed salt in it.

That's just the way he is. A sadist.

I think he's got a real problem with Webb.

Webb never had a chance but won anyway. I was a poll junkie for almost a year before the midterms, foolishly hoping we might take control of the Senate. A couple of months ago I thought our best bet for pickup number six would be Tennessee, but then Publicans played the race card. Then here came Webb, who gained a lead in the polls for the first time just before election day. What a roller coaster!

10. Sociopaths have no feelings of empathy, some can fake it however.
Bush doesn't even bother to pretend. He has never had to be nice
to people to get what he wants. He has used his status, wealth and
intimidation to do that. He has never had to develop any social skills.

And yes I think he is sadistic.
He likes hurting others.
I think btw that he has enjoyed the bloodshed and torture.
He may well be getting off on it.

11. You know, I would call Bush a prick for doing that, but...
...a prick is a useful object and Bush isn't.

What a rotten bastard of a thing to do to a parent who has a child on the front lines in combat ~~ and even more so considering that the parent is a combat vet and the speaker is an AWOL deserter.

What a sick, sore loser and nothing of a person that asshole is. I am so disgusted about what he did, words fail me.

I just feel so sorry for Jim Webb that Chimpy did this to him in an official setting while being POTUS and that Webb could not have decked the chickenhawk coward across the freaking room. To say something like that in a mocking tone to a parent who has a child whose life is in danger ~~ that must have been like a punch to the gut for Webb. He loves his child and obviously has a lot of concerns like any parent in his situation would. And....there are Chimpy's slutty daughters drunk and partying when Chimpy says that and like I said, it came out of the mouth of a chickenhawk AWOL deserter.

The whole incident is totally disgusting re Bush's less than appropriate conduct.

18. That's what I was thinking, too!
The fact that Shrub took so much notice of the son would've made my blood run cold, if I'd been Webb.

It almost reminds me of an early scene in the first "Godfather" movie: Clemenza and other hit-men of the Corleone family have just come back from taking some guy named Paoli for a ride. In order to see if they've accomplished the "hit", Sonny Corleone casually asks them, "How's Paoli?" Clemenza, wishing to tell Corleone that the boss's "hit" had been accomplished, says cheefully, "Oh--Paoli--won't see him no more!"

48. Wow, that's a scary thought.
I didn't really see it in his statement, but I suppose it's possibly in there. I would have thought it more up Cheney's alley, though. He was behind Plamegate. I don't think Bush is the one who takes that kind of revenge. We do know, however, this his administration does attack family members as retribution. However outlandish the possibility seems, I guess it is still a possibility.

If I remember correctly, his name was spelled "Paulie" in the book. He was the one who was supposed to be the Don's bodyguard. He was paid off by Sollozzo to call in sick the day of the attempted hit against the Don. I think the guy who assisted Clemenza in killing Paulie was a rising star in Clemenza's network named Roscoe. That was a great book. It spoke a lot about power - many times the author discusses the ways in which politicians and corporations act like organized crime. In the book, Michael's statement that "in five years the Corleone family will be completely legitimate" was truthful: his father had showed him the ways in which corporations keep their crimes entirely within the law, with the intention that some day his children would not be thought of as criminals, but captains of industry.

It's actually startlingly similar to the way in which the Bush dynasty handles itself. I don't know if this threat is present in Bush's statement, but it's certainly a scary possibility.

I get chills just thinking about it.

Another refrain.....When Jim Rhodes was re-elected governor in Ohio, following Kent State, most of the people gathered around the Capitol grounds for the swearing in seemed to be there for the many Democrats being sworn in for most every other statewide position. The way the grounds are set up, it takes up a city block, with walkways coming in from the four corners.

As Rhodes was speaking, he was quickly drowned out by a group of anti-war protesters marching from the corners toward the temporary stage, shouting "BULLSHIT, BULLSHIT, BULLSHIT". It was so great to be standing among the many dressed up, invited guests (for the other office holders), who quickly joined the chant and it reverberated off the surrounding buildings. Even the cops were at a loss, since they could have gone after the "rabblerousers", but what about the rest off us, there with our various printed invitations?

and even if he did, I doubt he knew that Webb's son was anywhere near it. This is after all the most incurious dolt ever to occupy 1600.
That being said, Bush was completely out of line in asking Webb a second time about his son, and I am sure there was at least some malice on Bush's part in his original query. My only regret is that Webb did not relpy the 2nd time:

32. Impeachment Inevitable
Edited on Thu Nov-30-06 01:50 PM by hawkowl88
Impeachment may well be inevitable with this evil ass clown. I believe he is truly evil and the only reason he's gotten this far has been with the active complicity of the corporate media. Shrub says malevolent shit like this all the time and it is only now that it is getting air play. He'd sacrifice the entire country for his own purposes. He is indeed a modern Caligula or Nero. And it truly is terrifying to imagine Caligula with nuclear weapons. Well, the winds have shifted and he no longer has the power of a rubber stamp congress, the wealthy money men who aren't oil industry or defense contractor executives, or their corporate media minions.

I believe this administration is going to implode at an accelerating pace. The media, the money men, and the people will become so terrified there will be no choice but to impeach this bastard out of mere sense of self preservation. The rest of the country is about to catch up to us canaries in the coal mine.

59. IM comments:
Me: "This mother was tearfully telling "Mr. President" what a wonderful person her son had been, and she ended by saying "He would've had a wonderful life." Whereupon Bush said to her, "How do you know he would've had a wonderful life?"
Me: I question whether Bush would have said that.
Me: unless it came out wrong
Me: like if he were asking "what would have made his life wonderful....what was he planning to do in life?"...actually trying to find out about him
Me: but he would not have asked that insultingly. I don't believe that for a second

I tend to be extremely biased against Bush especially on Iraq as my brother nearly died after being shot uncountable times just over a year ago. The U.S. gov't didn't provide adequate armor. Luckily the Governor of Minnesota had done so in one of the only positive acts he's made in his tenure. My brother escaped with shrapnel and a bullet all through his arm and a vest full of bullets. Another soldier in his humvee was shot in the face, but survived. But even given that, he would not have made an insulting comment to a mother. Even IF he felt that way, which I do not believe, he would not have said it because he'd not have made those thoughts known to the face of the mother.

He not only does not forgive as you do, but instead has demonstrated, on countless occasions, not only his inability to forgive and his incapacity for a semblance of grace, but also vindictiveness as a major personality trait.

I have seen not a single instance of his grieving over ANYTHING at any time. Contrast with with the memorable photos of a John F. Kennedy, agonizing over his most profound decisions.

The most genteel defense one could make of *'s remarks to Webb would be that he is someone completely lacking in manners, sensitivity, and common sense. I hope that you can accept this and reconcile it with your brother's horrible experience.

168. I agree with your last line.
Normally, I'd agree that he was being an asshole. But that quote was a bit extreme and I think it was a case of him speaking before thinking.

But a whole new dynamic is that he lost his sister at a young age and they went about their life without talking about her nor what happened. It could be (and is likely) that he is desensitized to death which is apparent in the war. So he focuses on the non-emotional aspects without regard to the emotional side of the issue because he's effectively become immune to death in most cases.

61. Wonder what kind of response Caligula expected
"He's doing fine, Sir. Enjoying his stay in Iraq. So kind of you to ask, Mr. President."

People think Webb overreacted to this snearing little shit's insincere inquiry? How the fuck to you think he's doing? The preznit better keep him safe or payback from President Webb is going to be a bitch.

117. Bush-Webb
Well, look how Bush has treated Cindy Sheehan? Then, remember
the incident of his mockingly looking under furniture
searching for WMD to the laughter and amusement of the
brainwashed, fawning media. The Webb episode is classic Shrub.
No empathy, no class, no conscience, no common sense,
absolutely devoid of any resemblence of a normal person. The
man is beyond despicable. As one post said, "he's a waste
of oxygen." I can't wait for 2009 and hope to never see
his stupid, smirking mug again. He's a true piece of toxic
sludge. He should be in The Hague as a war criminal and
sentenced to life in prison.

90. Proof positive that stupid is as stupid does...
Mr. President, when you take a cheap shot at a serving Marine who's dad happens to be a senator and a veteran Marine, you might want to look around. Those young men and women in the dress blues guarding the White House are all MARINES. The pilots of your helicopter are MARINES. The escort gunships are manned by Marines. The band and honor guard are MARINES.

TO ERROR IS HUMAN. TO FORGIVE DIVINE. NEITHER IS MARINE CORPS POLICY.

That is enough to have pissed me off right there. This young MAN is at WAR and as such, shouldn't be referred to as your BOY. How demeaning that was. And he didn't stop at saying it once, he repeated it.

Webb gave him the correct answer ... although "Screw You" would have worked for me too.

152. Don't forget the "so who are we honoring here?' remark he made to Cindy Sheehan
SHEEHAN: It was -- you know, there was a lot of things said. We wanted to use the time for him to know that he killed an indispensable part of our family and humanity. And we wanted him to look at the pictures of Casey.

He wouldn't look at the pictures of Casey. He didn't even know Casey's name. He came in the room and the very first thing he said is, "So who are we honoring here?" He didn't even know Casey's name. He didn't want to hear it. He didn't want to hear anything about Casey. He wouldn't even call him "him" or "he." He called him "your loved one."

Every time we tried to talk about Casey and how much we missed him, he would change the subject. And he acted like it was a party.

BLITZER: Like a party? I mean...

SHEEHAN: Yes, he came in very jovial, and like we should be happy that he, our son, died for his misguided policies. He didn't even pretend like somebody...

From the WaPo link posted above (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/11/28/AR2006112801582_pf.html):

-----------------------------
"How's your boy?" Bush asked, referring to Webb's son, a Marine serving in Iraq.

"I'd like to get them out of Iraq, Mr. President," Webb responded, echoing a campaign theme.

"That's not what I asked you," Bush said. "How's your boy?"
-----------------------------

I don't know if this holds true for military families, but it seems that he feels that all the soldiers are his children. It could have been a mistake, but I'd like to think that it wasn't.
