Aren’t you glad that once you have sacrificed your son or daughter the CAC reduces you to a NOK and they strongly urge you NOT to speak to the media about your sacrifice?

1. I got to answer that knock on the door... long time ago.

I guess I wasn't the PNOK or SNOK because the two navy officers didn't tell me why they were there. They simply asked when my parents would be home (I was in high school at the time). I thought they wanted to talk to my parents about my application to the Naval Academy, and so I was in high spirits... I never thought it would be about my older brother. Anyway, they were friendly but not overly so...

Later, I found out that I DID get into Annapolis, only to have my mother tell me no and hell no, the Navy was only getting one of her sons.

I can't imagine the 3003 (or more) PNOKs and SNOKs (mothers and fathers) that have had those visits now. It devastated my family (my dad was never the same, nor really was my mother... I think it was more that a little responsible for my dad passing before his was really elderly, he died a broken man).
