Bush concerned that Gen. Casey 'fixated' on withdrawing: so
wants him out quick!

. General Casey repeatedly argued that his plan offered the best prospect for reducing the perception that the United States remained an occupier — and it was a path he thought matched Mr. Bush’s wishes. Earlier in the year, it had.

But as Baghdad spun further out of control, some of the president’s advisers now say, Mr. Bush grew concerned that General Casey, among others, had become more fixated on withdrawal than victory.

Now, having ousted Mr. Rumsfeld, Mr. Bush sees a chance to bring in a new commander as he announces a new strategy, senior military officials say. General Casey was scheduled to shift out of Iraq in the summer. But now it appears that it may happen in February or March.

By mid-September, Mr. Bush was disappointed with the results in Iraq and signed off on a complete review of Iraq strategy — a review centered in Washington, not in Baghdad. Whatever form the new strategy takes, it seems almost certain to include a “surge” in forces, something that General Casey insisted earlier this year he did not need and which might even be counterproductive. .....

11. This IS the coup.
Sad as it may be, the voters are getting exactly what they fuckin' deserve for being uninformed, hateful and apathetic. Nader voters, gay-haters, xenophobes, jingoists, they all contributed a disproportionate amount to this, and they're all suffering for it, too. Collectively, they made us what we are today, a nation of serfs-to-be, waiting for the other shoe to drop. Germany, 1933.

I have no doubt at all that the past two Presidential elections were stolen--but they had to get close enough to steal it and we, the American people, let them do that, and then get away with it. Now we're paying the price.

13. Sorry, I'm really pissed off today.
Insomnia. And that damned war.

One of these days I'm going to go to sleep. But when I wake up, we'll still have that effing war.

6. Three Cheers For Victory!!!
"W"'s continued insistence on a victorious champaign in Iraq is destined to be the leading factor in the complete and total failure of any efforts that have been taken to restore peace in the region. The sad reality is that there aren't many actual efforts to restore peace going on, so it won't take long for them to be undercut.

The most mind blowing concept that has been trumpeted to the fine citizens of the U.S.A. is that in order to "restore" peace we must first create more violence.

I may be a bleeding heart, and I may be a bit of an Idealist, but I am quite sure that sending large numbers of troops to a region in order to kill off the people responsible for violence in the area is an oxymoron.

I have only one question to ask: Are we, as a country, so ignorant that we have not managed to learn anything from our own troubled past?

8. The answer to your question is No.
As a country we are not ignorant, it's just our government that is ignorant.

9. Riddle me this:
Why then, are we as a people not taking control? Why is our country spiraling into a helpless Corporate wasteland? Why is it that people pass the broke and abused members of society on a daily basis, and yet there is no vast public outcry against the squandering of valuable money on a military campaign while there are still thousands of civil war like battles raging on our own soil? If it truly is our government that is ignorant, isn't that a reflection of the society that it controls? Isn't a democratic-republic, such as the United States, responsible for the public officials that represent it to the world? I was under the impression that our government was "of the people", "by the people", and "for the people", and if that is the case then it isn't just our government that is showing ignorance to the rest of the world, it is the population of the USA on the whole.

7. I call bullshit on the NYtimes article.
A 'War Team' should consider ALL scenarios. They should NEVER be surprised in a war situation. There could be a worse case scenario, but they should have contigency plans for all. This is pure spin. IMHO
