NBC News reported tonight that Bush will announce "Surge and Accelerate."
According to NBC's Pentagon sources, "Surge and Accelerate" consists of sending 20,000 additional troops into Baghdad to pacify it, and accelerating turning parts of the country to Iraqis (presumably the same Shia militias that lynched Saddam).

26. It's Time To STOP Talking! This Man Is CRAZY & I Don't Know
how much more I can take!!! The time for REVOLUTION was a long time ago, I wonder just how long we are going to let them get away with this!

I SERIOUSLY doubt that the newly elected Democrats are going to mount a fight, and even if I were one of them I wonder WHAT I would do. I think it's going to be up to the people of the U.S. to do something about this crazy person and his evil doers!

Seriously, WE MUST DO SOMETHING! I may not be making much sense, but I do know that IF what Keith just reported and what I just heard at the beginning of Scarborough actually takes place, "we the people" do NOT LIVE IN A DEMOCRACY!! These people are waaaay out of control and I don't know any other way to stop them other than REVOLT!

11. A Calculated Move!
This is a calculated move to push the dems into a corner. If they refuse to fund then THEY are responsible for any disasters that follow. If they do nothing to block this 'surge' then they are responsible because they didn't take a stand. Once again good old Dubya has found a way to make his bad decisions a liability for those who oppose him.

23. It won't work
Everyone knows that things are a mess now and have been a mess from the very beginning, and they know it is Bush's mess. When a person screws up and then makes a suggestion that could mess things up even more the people aren't going to want to try their suggestion. The vast majority of the public opposes an increase in troop levels, and they are not going to allow Bush to use such an unpopular plan to pass blame off onto others.

20. 20k troops isn't going to pacify anything
the only way such a strategy would even work is if we put a 100k more troops in, with a large part of them going to Anbar. Which isn't going to happen because :

a - we don't have 100k troops
b - the American people would never accept it

as a military plan this is a non starter - which means it must be a political plan - meant as a way to pin the "weak on defense" tag on the new Democratic Congress - when the new Congress rejects this. Bush is still playing politics, as if the situation in Iraq is static.

What a dumbass.

29. The RW Washington Times details what is meant by surge and accelerate
and the article is less than lukewarm for the idea. The last paragraph details what is meant by surge and accelerate:

Few new ideas in Army's surge options for Iraq

By Rowan Scarborough
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
December 29, 2006

The U.S. Army is studying a number of options for surging troops into Iraq if President Bush picks that approach as his centerpiece for a new war strategy, military officials said yesterday.

One official who was sent the briefing slides for various surge options said he was struck with the lack of new ideas after an intense three-month review process inside the Bush administration. "Some of this stuff is what the old Coalition Provisional Authority looked at," said the official, referring to the U.S. government organization that ran Iraq from 2003 to 2004.

There are now about 135,000 American forces in Iraq. Surge options range from a brigade of some 5,000 soldiers to as many as five brigades, or nearly 30,000 troops.

If Mr. Bush, who met yesterday at his Texas ranch with Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates and other national security advisers, chooses that option, the main target would be to take control of the capital. Since last summer, Baghdad has been the scene of killings by Shi'ite and Sunni death squads, and by al Qaeda. A build up of both Iraqi and American forces there this summer did not achieve the desired reduction in violence. Commanders have said the next six months will be a critical time: the violence will either recede or Iraq will descend into civil war.

To surge by five brigades, the Army will have to keep some units in Iraq longer than their normal 13-month deployments, and accelerate the redeployment of brigades who already have served there. The Army will also call up more reserves and may tap forces stationed in other overseas regions, military officials said.
