Finally saw Saddam Hussein hanging video
I've heard people call it sickening, but it's so grainy & jerky that it's hardly offensive at all. I was asked about it by some of my school kids and so I scoured around to find it. Would I be wrong to let a few of my honor students come in and see it after school? My first thought was to get permission slips from their parents, but my second thought was that maybe I don't wanna create a paper trail.

1. I'd let them find it themselves if they really want to see it.
Don't want to create a scandal.

And I agree, it's not that jarring as a piece of video per se, mostly because it's so crappy.

2. Don't do it.
I wouldn't like it if my kid (15 & 11) had a teacher
show it to them. Let them find it on their own, if
they've the stomach for it, or come to me.

7. NO WAY: Would not say anything that might be construed as if you were encouraging them to view

No way. The kids know exactly where to go if they want.

5. I have refused to look
I was watching the Young Turks yesterday morning and when they started to show the video, I turned it off.
I think parents might get upset if it was showed to their kids without their knowledge. I know I would.

6. Bad idea IMO--even making the offer will get you in trouble
If anything, tell them that you've seen it but insist that you won't provide a YouTube link or anything similar.

If they want to see it, they'll find it. Don't put yourself on the chopping block.

8. To what end?
I can see no good coming from watching a man being hanged. Violence begets violence.

14. good question- that deserves to be asked, and
answered.

Personally, i believe this video should be REQUIRED viewing by anyone who has any access to any media. And i believe it is essential for people to bear WITNESS to the things being done, and enabled In OUR Name, with our sanction, and using our manpower and funds-

Why?
Because out of sight is out of mind. Because 'hearing' about something- and having to bear witness to it are miles apart.

Should we see what evidence exists from the holocaust? ABSOLUTELY- why? because we are feeding a morbid side of our psyche? Or because if we KNOW what truly happened, and we don't try to belittle or minimize the impact that ACTIONS have on life in this world, we have a hope of preventing it being repeated, or allowed.

Also, when people avoid or deny things that are troubling, or controversial, then the victims are shamed right along with those who should be the ones facing ridicule or rebuke. (and while Saddam clearly victimized many people, in his state sanctioned lynching he WAS the victim)

Denial and avoidance of the ugly, unpleasant, evil, horrendous acts that humans commit against one another only serves to allow it to continue and flourish.

Can i get a witness?

9. Disasterous idea.
Don't do it if you want to keep your job. And I don't see what they would gain from seeing it.

25. I agree, it is a disastrous idea!
Kids can watch it on their own on YouTube.

The video shows that Saddam was lynched by al-Sadr's militia, and that he died a martyr's death (to the Sunnis).

10. Wait until the Director's Cut comes out
There's outtakes and bloopers, from what I've heard. Plus a nice commentary from some of the guards.

:sarcasm:

All you would need would be one freeper parent and you would be looking for work. If they want to see it, they will find it.

13. Don't do it. The kids are not your friends.
A French teacher friend of mine was badgered by friendly kids wanting to know some dirty words in French. He finally gave in and complied. Sure enough, word got around and a parent complained to the principal. My friend, serving as a temporary replacement, was not invited back next fall. Kids cannot be trusted to keep secrets. They tell their friends, and their friends tell their parents. Before you know it, someone's out of a job.

Stay away from this...it's toxic.

16. Yes. That would be beyond wrong, imo.
I don't know why anyone would want to watch such a thing to begin with; if they are honor students, they can find it on their own. Can they not discuss the hanging without watching it? What is the point in seeing it, other than to feed the worst of human nature?

18. The post hanging footage was disturbing.
If you don't think about what was at the end of the drop down there below the trap door, it was just a man dropping out of sight with a noose around his neck. What you don't see is the sudden stop, the rope tightening, his head violently jerking to one side. I'm glad I didn't see that.

19. IF you showed that to MY honor student child, w/o my knowledge....
I'd have your job for it, and if I couldn't succeed in that, then I would raise so much hell, you'd be afraid to show your face..and yes, parents do have the right to make this decision...this is NOT something I would want my kid to be shown, whether or not they were on the honor roll....
windbreeze

ps: IF you are worried about creating a paper trail....doesn't that kinda tell you that what you are considering is way out of line???

if they cannot find the g.d. thing for themselves. And inviting people to view a hanging - f***ing tasteless.
