I can't believe what Speaker Nancy Pelosi just said
This came from politics1.com, Nancy believes that is if we give tax hikes to americans making over $500,000/year that we can improve education.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D) is suggesting possible tax hikes for the wealthiest Americans to fund improved education and health programs. In an interview with CBS, Pelosi said she thought a repeal of "tax cuts for those making over a certain amount of money -- $500,000 a year -- might be more important to the American people than ignoring the educational and health needs of America's children."

You know it's great that our speaker is looking out for education and everything but I don't believe in rewarding the richest %1 in america in anything espically giving them tax cuts.

Thoughts?

20. Hike can also mean to increase something.
I think it's derived from the "pull up your pants" usage. Sort of like "pull up your taxes".

34. Definition of 'hike':
hike (plural hikes)

1. A long walk.
2. An abrupt increase.
The tenants were not happy with the rent hike.

3. (American football) The snap of the ball to start a play.

6. you are confused
Ms. Pelosi said "tax hikes". That means we should tax people making over $500K a year MORE, not less.
That is what she said. Tax the rich more to pay for education.

She said "repeal of tax CUTS". That means INCREASING taxes on the rich. She did NOT say tax cut for the rich.

She is saying something profound and useful!!!

13. Thats not what I heard...
She said, she was for giving tax breaks to middle class, with families. NOT people over $500,000 per year. She said they are going to investigate the billions owed to the Gov't that has not been paid in Fed. taxes. She said , they will cut the spending by LOOKING for money owed to Gov't . Plus will look at the credits given to Corporations...

23. Progressive taxes and Education are vital to a middle class

After WW1 tax rates dropped during the "Roaring Twenties" as income disparity increased until the Stock Market crash of 1929, the start of the Depression. Under the guidance of Franklin D. Roosevelt, tax progressivity returned, and the top tax rates went up, programs like Social Security and Unemployment relief got started, the CCC & the WPA put people back to work creating infrastructure thats still in use to this day.
My Parents got thru the Depression with a progressive income tax, we won WW2 with a progressive income tax. The 12 million men & woman that served in the military in WW2 came home, the GI Bill sent vets to college, and they started families. This created the largest, most vigorous and the best educated middle class, in the history of the planet. Labor unions were at the zenith of their power, our eductaional institutions were the envy of the world, corporations made money, the wealthiest made money. The American Dream was born.

35. Repealing tax cuts for the wealthy.
I have no problem with that. I doubt I would if I were wealthy.

While we're at it, let's make a million-dollar-bomb or two less each year, and pass that money onto the lower and middle classes without which this nation and economy could not function.

37. Republicans lie about tax rates hurting the economy
In the 1950s when we had a booming economy, the best one America has ever had, and millions of us were raised in the middle class thanks to VA loans and the G.I. Bill, do ya know what the top tax rate was on wealthy people?????

Ninety-two percent (92%)!!!!!!!

So much for that theory!!

the baby boomers were just coming into the age where they went out and got jobs and started flooding the economy with their purchases ... the "fact" that the inevitable "But JFK said to lower taxes to increase blah blah blah ..." crowd tends to ignore ...

38. The Top Tax Rate Under Eisenhower Was 92%
All told, the wealthiest Americans paid 50% of their income in taxes back then. Today, the wealthiest Americans pay roughly 17% in taxes, all told.

Our GDP growth was substantially better back then compared to now. And a typical single 40-hour-a-week job could support a Middle Class family - unlike today.

Interesting, no?

42. Highest tax bracket was 70 percent until 1980.
It was over 90% through the 50s. JFK lowered them to the high 70s% and they stayed in the 70s until the early 1980s.

To hear the repigs, the world will move off its axis if millionaires are given a modest tax increase. Knowing historical data puts their whining into proper perspective.
