Did Nancy Pelosi actually say that? Or is that in the mind of the Freeper who wrote a letter to the AZ Republic. He also bashed Cindy

8. She is the most powerful woman in America, isn't she?

I don't know what this is about, but doesn't being the highest ranking female in the United States government make her the most powerful woman in America? Is not the president frequently referred to as the most powerful man in the free world? How does this not follow?

Does someone have a problem with this?

1. I have no idea what you people are even talking about, but...

2. If she did say it, so fucking what. She *IS* the most powerful woman in America today. She SHOULD say it. She should be PROUD of the fact that she is the most powerful woman in America today.

And this bothers you, why?

17. If Speaker Pelosi said such a thing, why not provide the link to the comment?
...Which would probably be impossible.

BTW, Thom Hartmann DID say it on his show a couple days ago (with great pride I might add )

But so what -- he's a radio host --- not the Speaker.

So... where's the link?

19. Was this made up? w/link
--- "We have waited over 200 years for this time to come," Mrs. Pelosi said on the eve of her selection as speaker, a position that makes her second in line to the presidency after Vice President Dick Cheney.

"We will not just break through a glass ceiling, we will break through a marble ceiling," she said. "In more than 200 years of history, there was an established pecking order -- and I cut in line."

After calling herself "the most powerful woman in America," Mrs. Pelosi flexed her right muscle like a weight lifter to much applause at an event yesterday titled a "women's tea."

"All right, let's hear it for the power," she screamed as the jubilant applause continued.

20. That's just a link to a forum post for the Argus Leader newspaper
(A newspaper I wouldn't trust, anyways.)
Still not a verifiable link for this quote.
And the only "news" link when using the first sentence: "We have waited over 200 years for this time to come," Mrs. Pelosi said on the eve of her selection as speaker, a position that makes her second in line to the presidency after Vice President Dick Cheney."
still is the Washington Times, which has been known to create stories out of thin air before. (Look up the "I'm Prudenized" chapter in Al Franken's Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them)

22. Hard to believe someone would go to that effort
to make up a story about a women's tea with those quotes and detail ... just saying. I am sure someone can find out where she was that day, as a first step, if they really wanted to.

Doesn't really matter, but I am not a fan of Ms. Pelosi since she obviously isn't going to call for redeployment or defunding the Iraq war. She called for redeployment in August 2006 ... now not a peep about it.

25. Like I said, Franken's had stuff made up about him in the Times
So I don't think it's that hard to make this kind of thing up.
The Washington Times is very adept at taking "creative license" with quotes from people.

And isn't it still rather interesting that the only newspaper to report on this was the Washington Times?
(I could whip up that much detail in 30 minutes if I wanted to. Hell, they do it on Fox News all the damn time.)

27. Sorry
Sorry ... I didn't realize that the first link I provided may have included a bogus line about "most powerful." The following is a link from the AP ( I hope that is ok? ). It more or less confirms the "tea" and most of the quotes in the first link. I hope you understand my confusion.

24. Did you read the rest of the LTTE?
The Arizona Republican is a right-wing rag of the worst kind. I know - I used to work for them. And the quote is attributed to The Washington Times - yet, another right-wing rag.

That said - did anyone really read the rest of the letter? Yes, it bags on Pelosi but not without some good reason. Don't get me wrong - as a woman, I'm so pleased to see a female Speaker (and the fact that she's a Dem is just icing on the cake!). However, I see the point of the writer (who, by the way, shows no real partisanship, bagging on Pelosi, but then speaking about Condi and Hillary as both trendsetting females). The point was that women have broken through glass ceilings and this isn't a big deal - well, it is a big deal, but maybe one that was made too much of. Perhaps by making such a BIG deal when a woman accomplishes a milestone as this we're saying it's a rare and unusual thing - and that implies that it shouldn't happen too often. I'm not saying don't celebrate it, but maybe it's better to celebrate the bigger picture as well: that women are making strides in all walks of life every day and it's just getting better and better for us. It's an interesting point that I hadn't considered before.
