ORANGEBURG, S.C. - South Carolina Democrats expect to hold the first debate of the 2008 presidential cycle on April 26 at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg County, the largest concentration of black voters in this early voting state.
The hour and a half debate at the historically black college will be televised live nationally by MSNBC, state party Chairman Joe Erwin said Monday outside the college's Martin Luther King Jr. auditorium.
Erwin and U.S. House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., both hope the 7 p.m. debate will be held inside the 900-plus seat venue. But anywhere on campus will be important on several scores, they said.
"This is the heart of where such a great part of our political base exists and it is something to showcase the diversity that we talk about so much," Erwin said.
