..we're ALL missing the big picture. John Edwards is the candidate who has been so successful because his campaign has been able to pull independents out to the polls. He jumped from 2% to 15% in NH b/c of this. He jumped from 12% to 30% in Missori because of this.

Look everyone: It's great for unity among hard-core Dem's that folks are falling in line behind Kerry. There are others, such as DK, who I REALLY DO ADMIRE. But last time I checked, Al Gore carried virtually NO States among NC, SC, FL, and the ENTIRE mid-west. We need a frsh, positive voice as our candidate. Face it, he's much sharper & presidential "looking" than JK. Petty, though it is, that's how many people (I've spoken to them in many States) decide to vote.

Now I'm not by any means suggesting that the well-informed folks who frequent DU are shallow like this, but we need to stand behind someone, John Edwards specifically, who will be able to bring undecideds, repub's, and simply MORE democrats from around our heartland, OUT TO THE POLLS for us. If they're the slightest bit opposed to GW, or are hard-core ABB, they'll have very little qualms about supporting Edwards for President.

I have been volunteering for his campaign when I'm not in the classroom teaching my 5th/6th graders, and THIS is the message I've gotten.

Much of the Kerry phenomenon is media hype+plus+people not wanting their vote to go for not, by pulling the lever for someone else.

We need Edwards. we need to win States that Gore couldn't win--NOT just focus on the hoop-la of how well JK has done in States where DEM's already have the edge.

I like this poll, though, and I think it's pretty timely.

There are a lot of things to like about Dennis (or not, for some), but it's pretty much all about the ideology, as far as I can tell.

For me, his positions put him really head-and-shoulders up above any other Democrat in the race - that, and his integrity.

I just had this thought come to mind -

What if Dennis Kucinich taught "Compassion School" and George Bush was forced to attend by court order after being driven out of Al Gore's house this fall?

Dennis Kucinich vanquished a Republican in a congressional district that is dominated by Democrats. He won re-election in 2002 with over 70% of the vote. The Republican that he beat was out of place in that district, so it is really not that big of a feat.

I personally think it is much more impressive that Edwards knocked off Faircloth in a very Republican state, or that Kerry was able to hold off William Weld. Weld was a Republican in arguably the most Democratic state in the country, and he was able to win re-election with 70%+ of the vote.

I think that both of these events were much more convincing than Dennis knocking off a Republican in a Democratic-dominated congressional district.

Most seats were going the other way in 1994, when Kucinich ousted incumbent Republican Tony Sinagra, despite being outspent two-to-one.

In 1994, Kucinich challenged Republican Ohio State Sen. Anthony Sinagra for his 23rd district seat. The district was composed of Cleveland neighborhoods which had historically responded positively to Kucinich’s blend of progressive populism and the election quickly became a lively and spirited race, with Kucinich leveraging the strength of the expansion of the city's publicly-owned light system which he had protected from privatization, and which even today provides low-cost power to almost half the residents of Cleveland. Although he was outspent by his Republican rival 2 to 1, Kucinich emerged as the victor.

In January 1996 he entered the Democratic primary for Ohio’s 10th District seat in the House of Representatives. Thanks to his experience as mayor and recent victory over Sinagra, Kucinich had significant name-recognition among voters, and went on to challenge Republican Rep. Martin Hoke in the general election. Kucinich relied on a grassroots campaign with ties to lower- and middle-class communities in his campaign against the two-term representative. He received decisive support from environmental groups and labor unions, including the AFL-CIO, which poured more than $1million into ads against his opponent.

In 1998 the Cleveland City Council honored him for, "having the courage and foresight to refuse to sell the city's municipal electric system." Kucinich was right then, and he's right now. That's why he beats Republicans.

And Kucinich has never wavered in aggressively championing for the “little guy.” In his first term in the U.S. Congress, he emerged as a vocal critic of NAFTA. He has also opposed cuts in Social Security and healthcare and advocated for a patients bill of rights that would allow all patients their choice of doctors and specialists. Today, as chairman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus (the largest congressional caucus), Kucinich has promoted a national health care system, preservation of Social Security, increased Unemployment Insurance benefits, and the establishment of wholesales cost-based rates for electricity, natural gas and home heating oil. When the Supreme Court ruled that mandatory arbitration could be a condition of employment, Kucinich introduced a bill to reverse the Court's decision.

Kucinich has been re-elected with increasing margins each time, and now pulls in 74% of the vote in his district. Kucinich opposes the death penalty, NAFTA, and the WTO, and champions single-payer universal health coverage, and empowering family farmers in moving into energy and food distribution.

People who try to discredit Kucinich's dramatic wins over incumbent Republicans by trying to credit the liberal nature of his district are missing the point.

Dennis wins because he's truly the soul of the progressive movement today. His wins over incumbent Republicans are proof of the depth of inspiration he fires up in others.
