Pelosi On Opposing Iraq Escalation: "We Will Not Be Swiftboated On These Issues"
Edited on Wed Jan-10-07 08:36 AM by Bob Geiger

In a media conference call Tuesday, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) reinforced the tough stance that she and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) are taking against the Bush-McCain doctrine of escalating the Iraq war, denouncing Bush's historic "poor judgment" and warning that Democrats will not allow their loyalty to the troops to be questioned because of their stance.

"Democrats oppose the escalation. Senator Reid and I signed a letter to that effect to the president last week," said Pelosi, on the 35-minute call with leading Progressive bloggers. "And we're making a very strong differentiation between supporting our troops, which we do -- those in the field now -- and giving a blank check to the president for an escalation of the war."

"He's done this before, this escalation, and it hasn’t worked. And the same poor judgment that got us to where we are now , is what he wants us to respect as he goes forward."

Pelosi also made it clear that she and the rest of the Democratic leadership are ready for predictable attempts by the Bush administration to spin opposition to an ill-advised Iraq escalation as Democrats not supporting the troops.

"We will say what we believe is right for our country and if he wants to say 'you're cutting off funding for the troops,' we just have to come right back on that -- because that's all they say," said Pelosi. "What are they going to say? 'You want to cut off money for the troops' -- we're not doing that. There are people who want us to, but that's not what the leadership and the Democratic party in Congress is advocating, by and large.

"We will not be swiftboated on these issues," the House Speaker said firmly.

Pelosi was also asked to look ahead and give her interpretation on whether or not the Iraq war resolution -- or any legislation passed so far -- gives Bush the unilateral authority to invade Iran. She responded that Bush has no singular authority to make such a move and expressed concern that Bush will feign diplomacy, give up easily and move way too quickly to a military option. She was also clear in her commitment to watching Bush like a hawk if he tries to do that.
"No, that resolution does not empower the president or give him the authority to go forward in Iran.

"What I'm concerned about with the president is that he will try to make it look as if he's making diplomatic overtures which are not really of the depth and breadth that they have to be and then say 'well, I've exhausted the diplomatic remedy.'

"So what we have to do on the Congressional side, on our oversight is to, again, be unequivocal in Congress and globally that we do not want them to go forward and that we do not want to increase the number of nuclear powers in the world. It endangers the world, it's wrong.

"But, on the other hand, we have time to do this right and we're going to keep a close watch on the president so that he doesn’t call a gesture or token diplomacy as 'well, we tried that and it did not work.'"
Speaker Pelosi also confirmed what Bob Cesca wrote in Tuesday's Huffington Post: That one of the conditions being placed on the Iraqi government by the White House is that American oil companies be given first shot at Iraqi oil and be allowed to keep 75 percent of the profits.

"In the president's proposal, one of the standards that he's setting for them to meet is that 75 percent of the oil production goes to U.S. companies," she said. "This is stunning -- 75 percent of the production goes to the U.S. Is this what our kids are over there for?"

But Pelosi is also confident that even George W. Bush has little choice at this point but to admit that he has lost his grip on absolute power and, especially when it comes to escalating the Iraq debacle, will have to contend realistically with strong Democratic opposition.

"The election was a referendum against the president's policies in Iraq, and the president is going to have to, at some point, listen to the American people and we as their representatives will be strong voices -- strong voices for them," said Pelosi.

"I think that the president is paying more attention, of course, because we're in power but, more importantly, because the American people have spoken."

1. Woo-hoo! I'm thrilled to see this.
Thrilled to see her standing up and saying, this is how it's going to be, this is the plan, this is what we're saying. Thrilled to read "the 35-minute call with leading Progressive bloggers"... awesome. :bounce:

2. HANG TOUGH NANCY

HANG TOUGH miss speaker, the country is behind you. your right in calling him on his history of poor judgment.Because of his stupidity and lies (we won't stay and make a long war) he upset the balance of power in the middle east. he's made such a mess ,dragged his ass so long that it can't be salvaged. something a grade school child could've figure out in 2003.
It was his call,it was his ball game and he blew it along with all the respect world wide
for the usa.
Our only choice is "disgrace" or all out war! and if its all out war we have to kill so many innocents that the world would not forgive us.
either way the fool has backed us in a corner and a half ass attempt at correcting his stupidity is to little to late!

3. How refreshing to hear a member of the legislative leadership speak the words...
"...the president is going to have to, at some point, listen to the American people and we as their representatives will be strong voices -- strong voices for them."

Yes, finally, instead of the maternal/paternal bilge that has spewed forth from the RW and gwb, telling us American citizens how we just need to listen and really don't understand and how they (the GOP) are just trying to make us safe and besides gwb is the decider so we have no input, we NOW have a representative who leads the legislative majority and who recognizes she and her colleagues are just that...our voices in DC. :applause:

And, K & R....:kick:

8. The dems will sew up the military vote with their opposition to escalation
Dems need to speak loudly/clearly/frequently and then get results. Ollie North screwed himself the other day on FOX by insisting he didn't agree with Pelosi. Most in the military wish he did agree with her. Soldiers are sick and tired of being deployed, risking life and limb, and being away from their families for no good reason.

I think Madam Speaker is going to crush the Right Wing in the rhetorical slugfest which is about to/already is ensuing.

I'm very encouraged by this, and I look forward to seeing what may happen next.

What a complete (and refreshing) change of pace. :applause:

15. Good for Nancy!
I like her strong stand, and her refusal to allow us to be "swift-boated", since that's a pretty predictable Republic tactic. Bush needs to hear the message, but it'll probably cause all kinds of temper tantrums on his part. Maybe he'll have his meltdown on t.v., so we can all enjoy it.

It's good to hear there's an opposition party standing up to the president. The Speaker did not look happy after leaving the White House. I hope she keeps the president on his toes.

20. Did you notice THIS: "...the bush-mccain doctrine of escalating the Iraq war."
Oh, Dear God, I am in awe!

THE bUSH-mCcAIN DOCTRINE!!!!!!!!

Let's get used to that phrase, guys. Let's start USING that phrase! It's GREAT! Repeat BECAUSE it's necessary! Ties mccain to bush, and both of them like conjoined twins to a literal anvil of a loser national defense/national security policy!!! OMG - I think I'm gonna faint! It's almost TOO beautiful!!! Holy Crap, Bob - whoever's paying you needs to give you a REALLY nice raise! That will be a MOST certain "phrase that pays" as we start wandering down Primary Road. Just BRILLIANT! Absolutely BALLPARK (as in - hit one out of the). Sorry for gushing, but I'm seriously trying to put a very large exclamation point, underlining, and bold-face - maybe in hot red-orange and electric teal (watch those colors jump at you with visual dancing razors when they meet). This is REALLY important, it's an EXTREMELY useful new tool in our verbal arsenal (that we use when we rant here, complain to/with neighbors or coworkers or family members, write LTTEs, or call into radio stations). It should be used and reused and then reused some more. It should go into the national blabber-fest and become an oft-heard, oft-repeated buzz phrase recognized, in public, across the board and across the nation. It should be as familiar a phrase as "cut and run," "stay the course," "to be swiftboated," and that annoying broken-record tripe about fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them here.

If we want to permanently and decisively derail mccain's presidential aspirations, we need to repeat that one AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE.

That is a frickin' brilliant framing phrase. Great thinking! Kudos!

:toast:

22. I really like and respect Nancy
I was not so sure at first how strong of a leader she would be but she is showing some great resolve by not backing down about Iraq and not letting Chimpy control the debate. Plus, she's an Italian Grandma! Reminds me of my family, my Grandfather was the only one of his family born here, all the rest were from Italy.

yet Bush is still having deep problem's understanding every part of this!
