4. Me neither. She hasn't said either way; Tweety is right. She's strangely
silent.

5. Is she really against the escalation (it is not a surge - it is an escalation)?
Has she made any public statements toward this end, or are you just assuming that she is against it? Hillary is part of the Joe Lieberman wing of the Party, so I would definitely like to know where she stands on the issue. I would like her to state her position clearly and publicly.

11. I think she has made some kind of weak statements about it.
She has even said that her vote for the IWR was a mistake.

It took her a long, long time to come to that conclusion.

Imagine, what kind of president she would make. It would be the continuation of the nightmare.

13. Worst possible nightmare:
Hillary wins the Democratic Primary in 2008, and then by some divine miracle becomes President (that's what it'll take for her to win the General Election) - all while the Iraq War is STILL on going. Oh merciful Jesus spare us. What the hell would she do? Does SHE even know?

8. The silence is deafening!
:P

You would think Hillary would be one of the first individuals to come out against the escalation, simply because of how the public feels about it. Although it is hard to tell with her, it really depends on which way the wind is blowing and she is likely trying to remain silent on purpose. Then if something goes wrong she can speak up and say "I was against it all along!" or if it doesn't happen, and things get worse and the American people become angry at the Democratic Party for opposing it - she can then say "I supported it!"

We should try and force her to get on record, but even if we did I think the response she would give would be heavily triangulated. One of those responses where she says a whole lot of nothing, that leaves everyone completely uncertain of where she stands.

17. She'll try and abstain or...
...failing that vote with the majority of the Democrats. However, she'd then likely release a convoluted public statement providing her an "out" should things go sour.

15. I plan to wait til she actually declares her position
before summarily drop-kicking her. A reminder that several other Dems are also silent on this issue to date.

19. Agreed, we should contact all potential Presidential Candidates...
...and force them to make a clear public statement either for or against, while at the same time making perfectly clear that silence is equal to consent.

21. I agree unity on this issue is a must.
However, what about Lieberman? Hasn't he come out in public support of the escalation of troops in Iraq? (I am not sure if he has or hasn't, but I am rather confident - based on past statements and actions - that he supports it.)

22. Ugh. I'm glad he is identified as an Independent and not a Dem.
His position is truly repulsive. He had the audacity to talk on CSPAN about al Queda being the problem in Iraq, completely ignoring the civil war going on. He is in every sense of the word no longer a Democrat. However, the good news is I truly believe Dems will be able to peel off some Republicans on this and Joementum will remain deservedly and forever a nonentity.

24. I agree - I'm not worried I expect a clear majority.
There are a good number of Republicans who are ready to jump into the life boats and abandon the Republican sinking ship. I imagine a good number of Republicans will simply choose to abstain, if they can, but I fully expect the Democrats to be unified. Although, honestly, I'm a bit uncertain about Hillary. She really could fly either way.

I think she will probably either abstain or vote with the majority, but privately I think she is in favor of the escalation just like Lieberman is publicly. Hillary and Lieberman have a lot in common. I really think Hillary is in support of the Iraq War in private.

25. I saw Ben Nelson equivocating on this issue on CNN.

He really talks the talk of Republicans on the war.

Regarding Hillary, I don't hold her any more or less accountable for her 'yes' vote on the IWR than I hold the 27 other Senators that voted yes. This may be an unpopular POV, but quite frankly I find the conveniently-timed backtracking by some after the fact sickening and hypocritical because at one time they too seemed to be very on-board the war. IMO Hillary is fleshing out her testosterone to compete with the big boys for the top job, and I don't presume to second guess her on issues.

No worries, though. I think anyone that voted 'yes' on the IWR has demonstrated poor judgment and I won't be rewarding any of them in the primary with my vote. That is my prerogative as a voter and citizen and applies only to me.

I would like to think that public opinion (some 72% I believe) that is now decidedly against the war in Iraq will be the incentive some lawmakers require to do the right thing this time around. We can only hope and nudge them with our avalanche of phone calls and emails.

26. I agree with your thinking:
IIRC, when the escalation was first mentioned, Hillary was against the "surge" unless bush had a well thought out plan.

Ya see?

However, the polling data is heavily tipped toward "no" so maybe she's just against the "surge" even with a new bush plan. Or maybe she'll just wait a few more weeks while the polls settle down.

I'm not being mean here. Her polling guy said that while Hillary's advisers were split on the IWR, they decided that a "yea" vote would put her in a better position. Sorry, the idea of her political "position" being part of the thinking when it comes to life or death, pisses me right off. Forever.

27. and I would go a step further and say
Edited on Wed Jan-10-07 08:16 PM by AtomicKitten
I suspect most of the 'yes' votes on the IWR were not made with the consideration of it being a matter of life and death but rather had more to do with covering their political behinds. I can say with reasonable certainty Hillary does not stand alone in that regard.

I would also venture to say a good deal of the positions struck on the escalation will also undergo the same analysis and due consideration commensurate with the politician's political aspirations.

On edit: I agree, it is disgusting.

23. I think I heard earlier this week that Hillary was against the surge...
But, it's hard to tell considering she never gives interviews on the cable news networks.

I hope she doesn't think she can just keep her mouth shut and expect people to support her when she decides to run.
