Girl Scouts of Cannon Valley located in Northfield, MN use hunting for a fund raiser
Edited on Sun Jan-14-07 02:33 PM by Omaha Steve

I got this from a friend in an email. More info to follow soon.

It has recently come to my attention that the Girl Scouts of Cannon Valley located in Northfield, MN, plans to hold an "Aim High for Girl Scouts Continental Shoot" at Traxler's Preserve on January 27 as a "fun" way for hunters to help raise funds for the Council. Approximately 10 ducks per person will be released for the shoot. A raffle and other games of chance are offered after the gourmet dinner included in the package.

The wholesale slaughter of innocent animals is just about the worst way for a Girl Scout Council to raise funds. In the past, Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) has made statements that hunting is offensive and the organization does not advocate hunting, yet this is the second year the Cannon Valley Council has held this fund raiser. Causing blood, guts, and feathers to be strewn all over the landscape hardly meshes with the "Leave No Trace" outdoor philosophy of Girl Scouts.

I have been in touch with the national GSUSA office and the reply I received from Rae Schopp (Consultant, Council Partnerships) is as follows:

Because this is a council matter, we have referred your concern to the CEO of Cannon Valley Council. I have also referred your concern to the Fund Development Department at GSUSA for their guidance to the council.

I also emailed directly to the Cannon Valley Council, but have not received a reply. So I am now asking all Girl Scouts and anyone else who thinks killing animals for sport is something that GSUSA should NOT endorse, including the direct violation of Safety Wise guidelines regarding raffles and other types of gambling, to please contact the following with their concerns:

1. This event is NOT hunting.
It's killing. This event sounds like a "canned hunt". That isn't real hunting.

2. Both the Girl and Boy Scouts are.....
nothing more than fascist training camps, the "Hitler Youth" of our day. 'Gotta get 'em while they're young before they go learning tolerance and all other kinds of foolish facts and stuff, 'ya know?

welcoming open glbt leaders, leaders of the opposite gender and/or leaders of a godless bent. This one council is just plain WRONG on this issue but Girl Scouts do more to foster independent thinking and 'out of the box' activities for females than anything else I can think of.

I was an adult volunteer for 20 years, working with girls from 12 to 20. We worked on careers, education, sex education, family planning (I still wonder what the English teacher whose room we used thought about finding an open, extra lubricated condom...unrolled...in her trash the morning after one meeting. We did a 2 hour unit on birth control methods and didn't think about the consequences of throwing away the one really gross object until it was too late to retrieve it). World co-operation including the geography lessons needed for the girls to understand what and where and that included events both in our own council, where we had girls from all over the United States, Canada and some from Africa spend time with us, to places that included such widely separated locales as Switzerland, London, Mexico and India.

Girl Scouts of the USA are NOT just female Boy Scouts.

3. Why don't they just take the girls down to that ranch in Texas
and they can watch cheney shoot caged birds.

I agree, this is insane.
