In a number of respects Huckabee is a bit to the right of Darth Vader. His environmental record is better than the average Republican's, but he's a former Baptist minister who doesn't seem to have much respect for the separation of church and state, and he wanted creationism/intelligent design taught in the public schools.

7. Well, he is obviously quite effective at it so I hope he doesn't win the
Republican nomination.

8. It could be trouble for us if he is there nominee. the guy is from the South and
he's quick on his feet and has a sense of humor. I wouldn't want to put Hillary or Obama next to this guy in a debate

9. Certainly hasn't helped the GOP in Arkansas
Dems easily swept the State elections, Dems also have both Senate seats, 3 out of 4 of the US Rep seats. And really Huckabee had to work to win his last reelection in 2002. Doesn't seem to have much organization behind the charm.

17. NO! I can't stand any more Huckabee!
We here in Arkansas were all so glad when he went out of office. He is an egotistical right-wing evangelical Christian and he is seriously ethically challenged. I've met him several times. He's quite pleasant to talk to and far more intelligent than the current White House resident. (Yeah, I know. Not difficult.) He's very personable. He lost about 100 pounds to run for office, got a book out of it.

I think that's about all I can think of good to say about him. We do NOT want him to be president, and I'm not sure I'll even be able to watch the campaign if he's involved.

But he's still a right-winger.

Here are two reasons why you should NOT vote for Huckabee:

1. Wayne Dumond. This guy is Huckabee's Willie Horton:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Huckabee

Dumond case

The most notable criticism involving Huckabee involved the use of his authority as governor to pardon or commute the sentences of convicts. The most well-known of the pardons issued involved Wayne Dumond, who was convicted for the rape of Ashley Stevens, a Forrest City high school student. He was released from prison allegedly by pressure from Huckabee. After being released, he sexually assaulted and murdered a Missouri woman.

Some conservative commentators began to question Clinton's denial of clemency for Dumond in light of the fact that Dumond's victim was a distant relative of Clinton, "even though Clinton had recused himself in 1990 from any involvement in the case because of his distant relationship with Stevens."<14>

Shortly after Huckabee became Governor in 1996, the Arkansas parole board denied parole for Dumond. A month later, Huckabee met with Dumond's wife and announced his intention that Dumond be set free. Dumond's wife noted that "he has always been disturbed about the way the Clinton people never wanted my husband free". <15> A month later, in an unprecedented act, Huckabee met privately with the parole board to talk about the Dumond case among other things.<16>

In a letter to Dumond, Huckabee made clear that "my desire is that you be released from prison."<17> Huckabee's only official action in the Dumond case was when he denied a clemency request from Dumond. Huckabee signed his decision just moments after the state parole board granted DuMond a parole on condition that another state take him. On that same day, Dumond was granted parole by the parole board. Huckabee denies influencing the parole board in any way, but acknowledges some responsibility for signing Dumond's parole.<18> Huckabee said in a written statement, "What happened in Missouri was horrible. No amount of second guessing, blaming or finger pointing helps the family of the victim."<19>

As a result of the Dumond case, Huckabee came under fire for possibly issuing too many commutations.

2. He's a member of Free Republic, and even performed at their Inaugural Ball events in 2001 and 2005 :

20. Oh, my god! Is there anything on earth you could give a normal person
as a bribe to induce him to attend a freeper dance? It would be unbelievable. You'd want to go home and shoot yourself so you wouldn't have memories!

Here's a link with 11 photos of him with his band I found. Can't copy and paste them as they all have copy-rights. The Governor's shown in a less puffy size: http://cmonitor.mycapture.com/mycapture/folder.asp?event=161997

I live in the midwest, have heard all about Wayne Dumond. Huckabee is living a charmed life, considering Democrats most surely could have made a lot of noise about this grotesque case, had they been low enough to do it, like Republicans.
