Iran Guard says U.S., Britain, Israel "axis of evil"

Sun Jan 14, 1:50 PM ET

TEHRAN (Reuters) - The commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guards said on Sunday the United States, Britain and Israel were an "axis of evil" trying to drive a wedge between Shi'ite and Sunni Muslims.

President Bush originally labeled Iran, North Korea and Iraq -- before U.S. troops invaded -- as part of an "axis of evil." Washington accuses Iran of backing terrorism and trying to build atomic bombs, charges Tehran denies.

"America, Britain and the Zionist regime (Israel) are an axis of evil against the Islamic world and the whole of humanity," Guards Commander-in-Chief Yahya Rahim Safavi was quoted as saying by Iran's student news agency ISNA.

"They are trying to make enmity among Islamic countries and to make divisions among Shi'ites and Sunnis," he said.

He was echoing comments by other Iranian officials who have accused Washington of stoking sectarian tensions in Iraq where the majority of Iraqis are Shi'ite Muslims, like most Iranians. Washington blames Iran for fuelling violence in Iraq.

2. A solid argument could be made that Bush, Blair, and Olmert are the axis of evil
just on the basis of the number of deaths and human suffering they have brought to their victims.

4. Let me get this straight..a 3rd world mullahcracy is calling the oldest
democracy, the most intellectual democracy in Europe and
the ONLY democracy in middle-east as "axis of evil".

Whats next, the communist countries calling themselves as
beacons of freedom?

6. You forgot to mention that the only reason that Israel is the ONLY democracy in the Middle East...
is because the U.S. killed off the last one.

Hezbollah running a defacto government. But what's the
relevance of Iceland & Finland? Finland was a Russian
satellite, and Iceland is so small in population, it smaller
than Portland, Oregon.

Surely there have been small enclaves of democracy all over the
world. Heck my ancestors village in India was a democracy
back in 1600's since the village chief was elected by a
show of hands.

USA was the first democracy to be governed by an ironclad
constitution, with a population in 100's of millions, without
interruptions such as in Finland or Lebanon.

But it is typical of nit pickers to look at trees and losing
their way in forest.

And incidently, my ancestor country is now the world's largest
democracy, continuous for 60 years, with no military or otherwise
coup de tat's along the way, governed by an iron clad constitution,
with total and complete freedom of press and enforcement of laws.
Yes you guessed it, India. And prior to 1947, India was never a
democracy in its known history of 4000 years. So they have come a long
way, baby! Especially if the present trends continue, India will have
a larger economy than the United States in 35 years.
