YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO REMAIN SILENT
You Have the Right to Remain Silent
By Nancy Greggs

Yes, elected Republicans, you have the right to remain silent. But at this juncture, I believe it is beyond a right – it is an obligation.

Within minutes of the Democrats assuming their role as the majority, the inevitable criticism of their every action, every word, every plan or idea began, delivered in the whining tone you are now famous for, and continues unabated.

Not only is this detrimental to the spirit of bipartisanship you became so enamored of in the wee hours of November 8th, it is childish, hypocritical and, more often than not, downright silly – but alas, completely expected. Such are the times we live in; such are the morals of your party.

One finds it hard to understand why you would have trouble reverting to your normal acquiescent silence, a state in which you have lived for years while allegedly performing the responsibilities of your office. You sat silent as the president’s reasons for invading Iraq became exposed, one after the other, as lies. You sat silent as this administration rode roughshod over the Constitution and the laws of our nation. You sat silent as the nation’s debt grew to unprecedented levels.

You asked no questions; you pursued no investigation into the facts underlying the conduct of the War in Iraq, or its inevitable consequences. You quietly accepted spying on American citizens, illegal wiretaps, illegal warrantless searches, rendition, secret prisons – and eventually sanctioned the use of torture.

In fact, the only time you opened your mouths was to stand and vote “yea” on every bill that stripped the citizenry of its fundamental rights, turned our country into what has become a democracy in name only, and to support every scatterbrained idea put forward by the oh-so-obviously incompetent idiot you elevated to the presidency.

And now, after years of sitting back and doing nothing to improve the country or the lives of its citizens, you have the unmitigated gall to criticize others as they strive to undo the damage you have done, as they attempt to put this nation back on-track, as they act upon the needs and wants of the constituents they were elected to serve.

Your feigned outrage is, of course, understandable. It’s not easy to sit on the sidelines and watch the party you have criticized for years take the reins of power, and actually accomplish the very things you ignored on behalf of the American people. A raise in the minimum wage, adopting the recommendations of the 9-11 Commission, taking steps to ensure necessary oversight and ethical behavior – your rancor at seeing these things not just talked about but actually acted upon must stick in your craw like a rotten pretzel.

But the truth of the matter is simply this: You lost your right to criticize a long time ago, and it’s about time you woke up to that fact.

As the Democrats adopted the recommendations of the 9-11 Commission, you said, “Where will the money come from?” Don’t you think that’s pretty rich coming from people who have sanctioned the expenditure of billions of dollars in Iraq, without even a modicum of fiscal oversight, and without a single positive thing to show for it?

Don’t you think that’s an almost humorous reaction from the same people who gave tax-cuts to billionaires, and corporations making record profits? Don’t you think that is an amusing retort from a party that exercised no oversight when it came to no-bid contracts to Halliburton and other administration-connected war-profiteers?

Don’t you think it is downright laughable that the same people who have plunged us into unprecedented debt, while screaming from the rooftops about their unique ability to safeguard the nation, now ask where the funds will come from to inspect cargo at our ports?

Let me break this to you gently: Nobody’s laughing, least of all the hard-working middle-class who, along with their children and their grandchildren, will be paying off the money you handed over to Big Oil and Big Pharma without so much as blinking an eye.

Some of you are still, and unbelievably so, persistent in reiterating the worn-out talking points that have already been proven to be as baseless as they are ridiculous.

You sit in your comfortable chairs on the TV talk shows and rail about the Democrats’ position on winding-down our military presence in Iraq as “not supporting the troops”. Yet again we hear the rusty rhetoric of the same people who voted for cutting the benefits and pensions of our men and women in uniform, the same people who sent them into combat without body or vehicle armor, the same people who agreed to stretch our military to the breaking point while their own children attended expensive private schools funded by the raises they voted for themselves time and again.

But we as a nation have sadly come to expect your hypocrisy in all matters. While you babbled incessantly about winning the hearts and minds of the people of Iraq, you appropriated billions to build an embassy in Baghdad, complete with generators and water-filtration systems, right in the middle of a populace that has to forage for clean drinking water on streets so wracked with violence, it is a task that may cost them their lives.

While you praised the Mission Accomplished of a delusional, incompetent Commander-in-Chief, suited-up in the military gear he eschewed when it was his time to serve, you looked the other way as “liberated” Iraqis were arrested without cause, detained without charge, and tortured. While American citizens in New Orleans were left to drown or die from lack of food and water, you extolled the virtues of a president who left the oversight of that disaster to the incompetent cronies he’d appointed, as he continued the vacation he’s been on since the day he took office.

To be perfectly blunt, the only explanation for your behavior while in office is the fact that the vast majority of you are blatantly stupid. Too stupid to know that voters would find a raise in the minimum wage more to their liking than the Bankruptcy Bill. Too stupid to comprehend that the outsourcing of jobs would not find its way into the hearts-and-minds of out-of-work Americans. Too stupid to realize that when you questioned the patriotism of those who oppose your policies, you just might be insulting the voters on whom your job depends. And way too stupid to have the foresight to know that the monster you have created, George W. Bush, would hang around your necks like an anchor as you struggled to keep afloat, totally uninterested in the political survival of yourselves or your party as he arrogantly played the role of omnipotent emperor – a title that you, yourselves, conferred.

So now as the Democrats do what you could have done but wouldn’t, and achieve what you should have achieved but didn’t, you sit and whine like shocked-and-awed school children, outraged as the teacher awards gold stars to the students who did their homework, while you are relegated to the back of the classroom, dismissed as too lazy and ignorant to deserve attention.

In view of all of the above, I would think it obvious that it is time for all Republicans to remain silent – except, of course, when it comes to praying, something you all allegedly do every day. When asking forgiveness of the Almighty for what you have done to your fellow citizens, your country, and the world at large, you might want to pray fervently and frequently – and by all means, do it loudly, because between you and me, I don’t think God is in a listening mood when it comes to people who wrapped themselves in Christianity as they sanctioned torture and the deaths of innocent women and children, while at the same time ignoring the plight of the homeless, the hungry, the sick and the dying.

You have the right to remain silent. It is a right you would be well advised to exercise in the coming months, along with an invocation of the Fifth Amendment as you are asked, under oath, to explain your complicity in crimes against the citizens of this country, and against the citizens of the world.

Or, to put it in terms even the dumbest Republican can understand, it’s time to shut the fuck up. And if you take umbrage at that expression, remember that you found that four-letter expletive perfectly acceptable when your vice president used it on the Senate floor.

Yes, shut the fuck up. It is an expression that is crude and distasteful, and denotes a total lack of respect for those who it is aimed at – and I cannot think of a more appropriate time to use it, nor a more deserving group of people to say it to.

43. All true, but way too many Democrats went along with
the repugs. It's not too soon to review voting records demand change and throw out the dinos in the next primary. Did your representative or senator vote for the bankruptcy bill? How about Iraqnam? How about the dozens of other stupid things they've done going back to NAFTA? Shame on the repugs but what can you expect it's their nature. The REAL shame is those repug lites hiding in the democratic party it's time for a cleansing, just use their voting record.

7. #3 K&R, and very well done, again. I remember Arlen Specter acting
as if he would do something about the 'unitary executive' then caved. I remember watching the hearings on Alito and he caved.

The republics were so willing to let their little brat-boy get away with scrapping the Constitution and The Bill of Rights and never standing up to the (insert your favorite expletive here) boy king, and they expect bi-partisan niceness? consideration?

I don't think that they're blatantly stupid. For many years I've told my kids to think of republicans as cowards in a corner pissing themselves, and because they're so busy being cowards and pissing themselves they seem to forget that they're pissing on the Constitution and The Bill of Rights, and they seem perfectly happy with it.

Your post is wonderful and I hope that you don't mind that I added my thoughts in this post.

42. Running the government is 24/7.
Someone has to do it and it's been solely the repukes. As they striped our freedoms we all did little. Sat in silence. The public temporarily had enough. But, their Freeper pr machine never stops. Democrats don't have their power and money. We need our foot soldiers to remember politics never sits still. We sit in silence, they don't . We want our progressive Democrats to have some backbone, we need to remember there are out there every day, sacrificing themselves to the Repuke pr machine.
That means we need be geared up every day to help counter the Republican attack machine and give our Democratic member of Congress some cover /support from that attack machine.
There should be marches, protests, letters being written every day by our foot soldiers to help return the fire, if we want to see our policies and plans enacted. Nice rant Nancy.
So don't just blame Democrats if they fail to do all our hopes and aspirations. Did we help them to achieve what we asked them to do.

23. An excellent and damning summation of the last three Congresses
I have to take issue, though, with the line about losing one's right to criticize. No one ever loses their right to criticize what their government does, no matter how right the government is. I don't want to hear what the Republicans have to say either, especially in light of all the atrocious things you listed, but just because the Republicans are utterly bankrupt of any "moral high ground" does not mean they can be stifled.

62. We must have a few at least halfway decent orators here on DU.
Ernest Partridge has just written an excellent piece on how Bloggers are taking over from the MSM in getting the news out.

Isn't it time we moved beyond what is mainly analogues of the print media. Audio requires nothing more than a microphone and a quiet room; "Newsreels" and commentary, a cheap digital camcorder and a suitable background. Hell a blue or green screen and a "properly dynamic" backdrop is nothing these days.

And unlike the broadcast media, we don't have to do 24/7. Not that that wouldn't be difficult to do, with all the material that the MSM doesn't cover when it should.

However, we can and should choose our material carefully. It needs to resonate with our intended audience. And resonate strongly enough, that they will listen and watch long enough to hear and see all of what we have to say and they need to know.

Nor are we constrained by our "advertisers". They can't cover the cost of our sweat and tears and pocket change covers the material running costs.

Surely amongst all of us here, we have the audio/photogenic speakers to match our many, many excellent writers.

58. I will always prefer "repuke" - the visuals it rears is very appropriate...

has not read the words of NanceGreggs.

51. Bush is rather
a rotting albatross and his supporter's penance should be to stop every third person and apologize for the damage they've done to the world. They must apologize for the lies told for cheap political gain. They must return their ill gotten gains that now rest in off-shore accounts to avoid taxation.
"If you prick us do we not bleed?
If you tickle us do we not laugh?
If you poison us do we not die? And if you wrong us shall we not revenge?"
(The Merchant of Venice, Act III, sc. 1, ll. 60 - 62)

It looks like their plan is to create major upheaval in the middle east, steal as much as possible, resign and leave the mess for Nancy Pelosi.

You are truly an inspiration. You breath life into the words you write as they come leaping off the page and set my heart racing. You have a talent that I both admire and envy. Excellent, excellent and yet again, most excellent.

64. An amazing piece, Nancy.
Edited on Wed Jan-17-07 02:47 PM by silverweb
It contains not a breath of anything that can be misconstrued as untrue and the reTHUG scum deserve every word. Would that they had the honesty and elemental decency to squirm with even small spasms of conscience.

This has been sent to everyone on my list with encouragement to forward freely and widely.

On edit: IMMEDIATE reaction from someone I sent it to:

Very rude article. I forced myself to read it even though I was insulted. Speaking of name-calling, just about every political article I've received from my Democratic friends were like the door-to-door rantings and ravings of the Jehovah's Witnesses, except they at least did not use foul language.

Please, let's all get along and stop dividing up the country into red and blue. The only folks who will profit from such antics are our enemies who are rubbing their hands with glee -- divide and conquer. And stop lumping all Republicans into stereotypes. We have feelings and, yes, convictions.

My response: I almost didn't send this to you because I pretty much anticipated your reaction. But what I really want to know is, what part of the article is untrue?

65. Interesting ('though expected) response ...
Sorry your friend was offended by the "foul language". Was he/she also offended when Cheney told Leahy to go fuck himself on the Senate floor, or when Cheney referred to a journalist as a "major asshole" on an open microphone at a rally?

Just wonderin' ...

Would be interested to know if there is any reply to your reponse!

66. Yup... here's the rest of it:

Her: I wasn't mad at the FACTS presented in the article; I was insulted to be categorized as a "dumb Republican" and being told to "shut the f... up." Yes, our Vice President used that language; I do not.

And so, yes, I took it personally. I'm not defending the wrong-doings by our leaders; I AM unhappy at being stereotyped just because I am a registered Republican. As such, I do not HAVE to vote for the Republican candidates if I choose otherwise. I'm totally agree with President Ford in his analysis of past presidents in the 20th century. He felt that Harry Truman was the best of them all. A Democrat, you will note.

But, keep the articles coming. It exercises my mind. I also enjoy formulating a more-or-less intelligent reply (for a senile old lady, that is).

Me: It was addressed to Congressional Republicans -- the ones who are doing all the whining and slandering and lying -- as well as to people who still mindlessly support their hardline neoconservative ideologies. I think you're overreacting by taking it personally.

For individual citizens who happened to be Republicans but who read the piece thoughtfully, I would hope that it causes twinges of conscience enough to make them reevaluate their support for the current GOP. Apparently, contemplation of the facts has been causing good people like yourself to abandon the GOP, pretty much in droves. That's the idea, until that party returns to some semblance of humanity and sanity.

... and you're NOT senile! :)

==============================

Note: As an aside, she's the only evangelical Xtian friend I've managed to hang onto, if only because of her last sentence and the fact that she's not a "fundie". She's in her 70s now and a retired former coworker. We go 'round and 'round on some issues, but I forgive her for the effects of her years of indoctrination because she at least tries to see others' POV when she can.

67. Thanks for getting back to me.
Glad you pointed out to her that the reference to "dumb Republicans" was not aimed at voters, but the GOPers who supported things like the Bankrupcty Bill, no-discount drug purchases on behalf of citizens, tax subsidies for oil companies, etc.

It still absolutely AMAZES me that the vast majority of them didn't even CONSIDER the fact that when they came up for re-election, their constituents would get rid of them as a direct result of the things that are completely detrimental (especially financially) to the average working-class citizen.

This seems to be a constant problem with Republican reps - they support policies that totally favour corporations, Big Oil and Big Pharma, and don't stop to think that it's the votes of the middle-class that determine whether they stay in office or not.

And please pass my apology on to your friend (who doesn't sound even CLOSE to senile to me!) if she was offended by the language. This piece was not meant to offend HER, but the people who have sold our democracy down the drain -- who, IMHO, DESERVE to be offended.

68. Thank YOU for your wonderful articles.
I love your command of and respect for facts and truth, to say nothing of your general style of hammering them home.

I also share your amazement and horror of arrogant GOPers who think they can just do whatever they want against our citizens' freedoms and well-being. I'm even more amazed and horrified by those citizens who not only blithely accept these constant assaults against them, but continue to support the traitorous criminals who have institutionalized these attacks.

Anyway, I'll pass on your apology to my elder friend. I'm sure it will be graciously accepted and much appreciated. She really is a good and sincere person, if suffering the residua of long-term brainwashing.

Thanks, Nancy, and keep on ranting!
