The Nutmeg State Divide
By Kate Phillips
Well, Senator Chris Dodd, newly announced candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008, was on NBC’s “Meet the Press” today, mainly talking about Iraq. And, of course, his fellow senator in his home state, Connecticut, Joe Lieberman, the “Independent-Democrat,” was also a guest, on the other side of the divide because he supports the president’s new plan to add troops in the war.
But Mr. Lieberman also seems to be walking another fine line. The former vice presidential nominee in 2000 for the Democrats and short-stinted presidential candidate in 2004, remained reticent, even recalcitrant, on Mr. Dodd’s candidacy (as he had been earlier in the week).
Mr. Russert: Senator Dodd, before we go, you are running for president?
Senator Dodd: Yes, sir.
Mr. Russert: You’re willing to take on Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, John Edwards, and say you’re more qualified than they are?
