Boston Globe claims Gore is quietly "putting out feelers" about an 08 run

Another chance for Gore?

By Scot Lehigh, Globe Columnist | January 16, 2007

(snip)

"More and more people are asking, 'What about Al Gore?' " says Steve Grossman, former chairman of the Democratic National Committee. "If Al Gore were to announce for president, he would be a first-tier candidate on day one. Instead of it being Hillary and Obama on the covers of the national magazines, you would have three faces there."

(snip)

But when one friend asked him recently about another campaign, Gore didn't dismiss the question out of hand. "We'll see how things go," he replied.

Another Democratic source says that in recent weeks, the former vice president's camp has quietly put out feelers to presidential politicos, asking whether they are committed for 2008.

I sure hope he runs -- although I'm starting to think he better decide sooner rather than later before all the money people, etc. are snapped up by other candidates.

7. I like Gore, but I'd only vote for him if he were obviously ready to fight
for the office, as they'll likely just pull more crap again.

What I'm saying is, I hope that he stands strong against the inevitable noise. Someone has to, and whoever does is who I'll likely vote for.

10. Last time he fought all the way to the Supreme Court
And after they ruled for Smirk, there was nothing legal that Gore could do to get sworn in as President in 2001. (There were things other people in Congress might have done, but they were unlikely to be successful.) The only option open to Gore himself after the SCOTUS ruling was not just illegal, it was unconstitutional and flat out unAmerican: start a civil war.

And right now we have a Dem majority in Congress, and it looks good for a Dem President in 2008. So a civil war to end the rule of the NeoCons wasn't necessary, was it?

(And anybody who still thinks that despite the fact we were able to vote a change of government in 2006 feels that Gore should have started a civil war back in 2001, I strongly urge them to volunteer for a couple decades service in Iraq, to learn what civil wars are really like.)

26. SCOTUS should have given it back to the people of Fla and ordered a statewide recount
but Gore wasn't asking for one, was he?

28. There was a full, statewide recount immediately after the election
As mandated by Florida law.

After that automatic recount, Gore's legal team had to get the legal system to agree to additional recounts, and they did that by sueing a few individual counties where there was a large difference between the original count and the statewide recount. The expectation was that Bush would sue to invalidate any local cases won by Gore, and then Gore's campaign could appeal all the way up to the Florida State Supreme Court - - and possibly the SCOTUS - - and use the local cases to prove that the entire state needed to be recounted again.

While the suits and counter suits were working their way to the Florida Supreme Court, Gore twice asked Bush to agree to a second statewide recount. Bush was the one who refused it.

The Florida State Supreme Court ruled that there needed to be a statewide recount of the undervotes, which is when the SCOTUS stepped in a declared the election for Bush.

24. Yes, the ritual thumb-wrestle for the office would have sufficed.
But I jest.

I think that if we knew how bad it would get, and could still go to, we might have all fought a bit harder, and longer, and camped out, and etc. etc. We didn't need to start a civil war, but the SCOTUS ruling was a shock. Dems in Congress should have fillibustered each and every time. There were ways to bring the thing to a halt, which is =exactly= what they would have done. It's sadly a fight for every single inch, and we have to treat it that way. We needed to Cindy the whole thing from day 1, and didn't. Now we have squatters in the White House, just like when the carny folk tricked the Simpsons out of their own home.

Thanks for responding to both of you, and for the positive attitudes and for supporting him, this is indeed part of the right path. I'm just as frustrated as anyone else, swinging around for answers is all.

37. How anyone can put Obama and Gore on the same magazine cover
is beyond me. One man is fire-tested, mature and experienced. The other, while he has tons of potential, seems to be believing his PR, has very little experience and seems like a young pup when compared to Gore.

I think Gore would embarrass most of the other candidates except Clark and Hillary (and I am NOT hoping for Hillary!)

14. I Must Say This Is Very Interesting... I'm Back To "What Shall I Do" Again!
Well, it is early, but I have so much respect for AL GORE!!

Because I live in Florida, it just makes my blood boil because he got screwed! I got so much email from classmates living in Texas that was so very NASTY! Can't tell you how many who wanted to know how come people in Florida didn't know how to vote, then saying we were so stupid!

I was shocked at how snide some of them were! I am still friends with many of them, but we don't "do" politics anymore!

16. Hey... I Still Admire Kerry A Lot... Was One Of His Biggest Supporters
too! My personal opinion is that there's been too much heat generated against him and it's doubtful he could become the nominee.

But, hey ANYTHING could happen! We have a lot of good candidates running, more than usual and the decision will be difficult. I happen to like Chris Dodd a lot too, but don't think I would choose him. I once felt Richardson would make a great VP, but became more impressed with Edwards after the 2004 election for my own reasons. Obama could run well too!

There are two of them that I doubt I COULD support, but it's still 2006!

But Al Gore did win and if he ran again... I would have a problem here, but he does deserve a very very close look! I admire him a lot!

this time. Definitely. He's a changed man, the real deal (now), and that's what we need. We could also use someone who really, REALLY gets it about global warming. That really is our most pressing problem, aside from the war or maybe even including the war.

23. Great column!
Several times Al Gore has been asked to rule out running in 2008, and each time he has refused to do so. My feeling is that he is keeping his options open.

He is also preparing to start a national debate about how America is governed, with his next book - "The Assault on Reason" - to go on sale May 22.

So in late May and early June we can expect to see a lot more of Al Gore on the TV talk shows. By coincidence - right around the time that speculation around the 2008 election will be warming up!

Nobody is better qualified to be President of the United States than Al Gore.

Gore has been proven right on so many issues, from climate change to the invasion of Iraq.

Next Monday he will draw a crowd of more than 12000 people for a speech in Boise, Idaho !!

If he is ready and willing to seek the Dem nomination, I predict that Gore will lead the field.

Unless and until he endorses another candidate, we should assume he is keeping his options open.

In the meantime - we can all find ways of helping to create the right conditions!

In Gore We Trust :)

30. If he enters he wins
and he wins it all. He is the ONLY one that can help pull us out of the abyss of the last 6 years. It would be the greatest landslide in presidential election history. Sorry all, but if Gore enters the primaries, all the other candidates need to drop out and get behind him as he has no political or ethical equal.

35. What about the primaries?
It's kind of assumed that all DU members who are eligible to vote in the USA will cast their votes for the Democratic ticket when November 2008 comes.

You can find the Forum rules under the "Help" icon.

"Democratic Underground is an online community for Democrats and other progressives. Members are expected to be generally supportive of progressive ideals, and to support Democratic candidates for political office."

This is not "Anarchist Underground". Nor is it "Nader Underground" ;-)

36. That assumption is not correct with respect to me.
I voted Nader in 2000 and support third parties in general. If the Democrats have John Kerry on the ballot I may not vote Democratic.

My goal for the past 2 or 3 years has been to get the Republicans out of power and I voted straight ticket Dem for the first time in my life. Now that the Dems have both houses of Congress, I feel I am more free to vote according to the individual.

I'm liberal and lean towards the Democratic ticket but I have no problem voting third party or even moderate Republican if the circumstances deem it appropriate.

34. Please Run Al!
I can't stand Hillary, she won't take a strong stand on anything. Obama is just too inexperienced to be president though he would be a good VP candidate. If Al won't run I guess its down to Obama or Edwards (who is still a little to slick for my liking). I really hope he is considering it and is watching the other potential candidates not take stong enough stands on anything. We need someone who tells it like it is and will not be intimidated by the Rethug attack machine. I think Al has done this before and knows what to expect.
