1. A neocon fantasy. That's a perfect description.
And I watch it, every episode.

2. I just started watching it. Very dramatic. I may have to tune in again. Pure
fluff.

3. A Neo-con fantasy where the
Republican President in season 5 is responsible for terrorist attacks, (presumably) in order to secure defense contracts and/or oil for his buddies? Or are they just talking about season 6?

7. Yeah, season 5 was a different for sure
Season 6 has been a neocon wet dream though.

Torture that works.
A Muslim kid next door that turns out to be a terrorist who takes a white bread family captive.
Rampant unstoppable terror attacks in major American cities.
Detention Centers for Muslims (That actually do contain real terrorists, not just innocents)
And suitcase nukes!

10. After only the first 4 episodes of season 5, though
It would have looked like a Neo-con's wet dream as well.

12. That's a fair point.
They could always (and often do) throw in some suprise villain who happens to be connected to the west, but that doesn't take away the fact that thus far we've seen that setting up detention centers are a good idea because you DO catch some of the bad guys that way.

We've also seen that torture pretty much always works (if you're brutal enough) and that you should never trust your Muslim neighbors because they are probably a terror cell.

Look, I'm not saying it's propaganda like a lot of folks here are, but the show is made by rightwingers FOR rightwingers.

Doesn't mean we non-knuckledraggers can't enjoy it though, it's a fantasy.

14. Well said...
And while they do seem to address some "progressive" issues, like constitutional rights being taken away (what sort of world do we live in where that is considered a "progressive" issue?) it certainly tends to lean significantly to the right. One thing I have noticed, though, is that it shows the Democratic presidents (both Palmers) as being much better, more honest, and more thoughtful leaders than the two repuke presidents (Keeler and Logan).

16. I'm getting sick of all this neo-conization scrutiny of 24.
If this was a true neo-con fantasy:
1. Jack would have no reservations about the use of torture

2. Jack would not have killed his friend who was hell bent on revenge

3. There would be no serious dissent to the infringement on civil liberties

4. All the middle easterners would be terrorists, not just the one you think is not but is.

5. A terrorist could not have reformed and repudiated previous acts of terrorism

The producers and writere are just trying to entertain and from what I see, trying to be as multi-textured as a TV drama can allow

Repeat It's just a TV show

4. Msnbc already beat them to it.
And I'm a huge fan, though I did ask my DH last night why I bother because of all the dire situations. I find myself hiding my eyes - a lot! But it IS fiction; if someone can't distinguish the difference, not my problem.

5. I love it.
Have it TIVOed and haven't watched this new season yet.

I know the neocons love to cite the popularity of "24" as evidence that the American people don't give a damn about civil liberties and playing by the rules. However, I think most Americans get it that it is just a TV show, slickly produced and filled with impossible situations. It's sort of a modern day Western.

17. And our civil liberties are addressed in the first hour. I'm not going
to ruin it, but it's a big worry for someone on the staff of the prez.

9. The guy who produced or writes 24 is close friends with Rush Limbaugh and was with him on the Viagra
trip. He has, also, been commissioned by FOX to do a right-wing version of Jon Stewart's show.

20. That doesn't mean "24" is a neocon fantasy.
How many other shows in the past have been similar to this?

Hell, we nuked ourselves in Independence Day. Nuked a city in Return of the Living Dead. The Day After, War Games, Patriot Games, etc. etc. etc. There are countless films and TV series that have dealt with terrorists and nukes and whatever. Just because the neocons control foreign policy doesn't mean this show is a neocon's dream.

Oh well, I'm getting a bit long-winded.

All I do know is that "24" is a kick-ass show and I don't want it to change a bit!!

David Chase, the man behind "The Sopranos" is a well-known Bush and Lieberman supporter. Still a fantastic show, though.

29. And you know this about the writers how exactly?
How do you know that they're not fully aware that the torture used on the show works as well in real life as Jedi mind tricks?

30. Good point. I'm no mind reader. The writer(s) could very well know they are promoting a false image
of torture.

11. Fox Show "24": Torture on TV
With at least one big torture scene in every episode and steadily increasing ratings, TV show "24" is more convincing than the White House at making the case for torture.

"24" is back on Fox TV -- the hit show starring Kiefer Sutherland, which premiered Sunday night, once again features at least one big torture scene in every episode -- the kind of torture the Bush White House says is necessary to protect us from you-know-who.

The show is much more convincing than the White House at making the case for torture; its ratings have gone steadily up over the last five years, while Bush's ratings have gone steadily down.

In "24," Sutherland plays special agent Jack Bauer, head of the Counter Terrorism Unit. He fights some of his biggest battles not with the dark-skinned enemies trying to nuke L.A., but rather with the light-skinned do-gooders who think the head of the Counter Terrorism Unit should follow the rules.

13. Jon Wiener makes a great observation about Kiefer Sutherland, too!
It's especially unfortunate to see Kiefer Sutherland play the world's most popular torturer -- because his father, Donald Sutherland, has been a prominent antiwar activist since Vietnam days and starred in some great films critiquing fascist politics, including "MASH" and Bertolucci's "1900" -- and also because Kiefer's grandfather, Tommy Douglas, was Canada's first socialist premier, and was recently voted "the greatest Canadian of all time" -- because he introduced universal public health care to Canada. The grandson meanwhile is being paid $10 million a season by Rupert Murdoch to shoot kneecaps, chop off hands, and bite his enemies to death (Sunday's special thrill).

22. I don't see where he's going with this.
Is Keifer Sutherland somehow "selling out" his heritage or his beliefs because of the role he plays?

25. LOL
The idea is silly. Kiefer has stated on several interviews that he's dead set against torture being used. He's a liberal in real life.

The guy took some time finding his groove. He's a bit Jack-like in real life...I'm hooked onto the show and wish him success.

31. Another aspect of the "24" torture obsession: Jack Bauer has been tortured many times, and always
bounces back just fine, never the worse for wear, leading the apparent idiots among us to imagine torture has no lingering harmful effects.

28. Yea, I'm sure neocon sex fantasies involve a black Democratic President
Honestly I don't really give a shit about what CNN has to say about any of this or anything really. And as far as Keith Olbermann goes, I respect his opinion on this matter but disagree with it.
