Surge in Iran's direction?

WASHINGTON, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- Almost a week since President Bush's vow to "surge" U.S. forces into Baghdad, a surge of a different kind got underway, says the Council on Foreign Relations.

This new surge is "in the direction of Iran," reports the CFR article by Michael Moran. According to the article, the aircraft carrier USS Stennis and its battle group will join the USS Eisenhower and its escorts in the Arabian Sea by early February. Britain has also increased its naval forces in the area.

Bush's nationally televised speech in which he announce sending more than 20,000 additional soldiers and Marines to Iraq included threats directed at Iran and Syria.

Bush accused the two countries of "allowing terrorists and insurgents to use their territory." The president vowed to "destroy the networks providing advanced weaponry and training to our enemies in Iraq."

"Asked for clarifications, administration officials say nothing is imminent, but nothing is ruled out, either," reports the CFR paper.
