Cowgirl's Early Morning Line--Republicans
As Democrats we may not be totally thrilled with our field but at least we don't have to vote for one of THESE guys.

2008 REPUBLICAN HANDICAP

STRAIGHT TALK JOHNNY (John McCain) 130 10-1
Beaten in a rough trip in 2000 Republican Handicap by Drugstore Cowboy (Bush) he's toned down his independent streak (some might say sold his soul) to become designated establishment favorite. Serious foreign policy street Cred and war hero status a big plus and moderate reputation gives him crossover appeal. This Keating Five member turned reformer--carries some baggage. Has little or no standing with Christian right (Dobson says he'd never, ever vote for him) not fully trusted by big business and is a big time Iraq war supporter--a hawks hawk.

Bottom Line: Republicans like to nominate the establishment candidate but the real right wingers can't stand him. Are Republicans going to line up behind the guy whose hearings helped introduce Jack Abramoff to the general public?

NEW YORK HERO (Rudy Guiliani) 140 20-1
The hero of 9/11 gets lots of support with law and order tough guy image but may have trouble running in the mud. We're talking about two ex wives, an affair with wife number 3 carried on publicly while still married to wife number 2. Add to this his association with the colorfully corrupt Bernie Kerik and a penchant for dressing like a woman and picking silly fights in public and you end up with a guy that only New York City could love.

Bottom Line: Colorful private life aside this guy is pro abortion (though he hs switched his opinion from time to time) and pro gay marriage. I have a better chance of getting the GOP nomination than this joker.

EYE OF NEWT: (Newt Gingrich) 140 30-1
He's Baaack. When last seen, Eye of Newt was more or less forced to resign from the Congressional leadership due to to private scandal--his very own intern, no less as well as questions about some fishy smelling book deal. You can't keep an old elephant down, however and now the architect of the Contract on (pardon me) with America is talking about going for the big job.

Bottom line: A hero to every Ayn Rand worshiping young Republican--the question is will party leaders overlook his baggage? Probably not.

STORMIN' MORMAN: (Mitt Romney) 120 30-1
Former Massachusetts Governor is sharp looking, pro corporate and has crossover appeal.

Bottom Line: Could go all the way if party leaders can convince the Fundies that Mormons are not guaranteed to go to hell.

NATIVE DRUMMER: (Tom Tancredo) 120 80-1
This working stiff conservatives hero opposes illegal immigration and free trade. Will get support from the Lou Dobbs voters.

Bottom Line: Party leaders aren't letting this guy anywhere near the nomination so forget about it.

HUCKABUCK: (Mike Huckabee) 120 30-1
Homely, mild-mannered candidate combines conservative religious appeal with a moderate approach to environmental and economic issues that give him crossover appeal.

Bottom Line: One to watch, if big business could learn to overlook his seemingly moderate economic and environmental views, this guy could be formidable.

4. Wow, I better check my odds. They do love Rudy, don't they.
I knew the pocket protector crew loves the Newtster and that Romney could be the guy they unite around if they could just get beyond that Morman thing, but Guiliani's the big surprise. Don't they know who he is??? Like I said, he'll have trouble if the mud starts flying, but so far none of the Republicans have started the smearfest.

They really can't stand McCain, can they? Funny thing is he's far more of a right winger than Guiliani.

I forgot Hagel, Brownback and Pataki. Oh well Hagel can just about forget it unless he runs as an independent so I might as well forget him. Brownback shot himeself in the foot and Pataki has always been forgettable.

8. I wonder if Rudy is the "anointed one"
It's early yet but so far no one in GOP circles seems to have brought up the inconvenient truth that this guy makes Bill Clinton look like a monk. Is there a GOP fatwa against anyone who brings up Rudy's personal problems much less his views on social issues.

It's sort of like how no one really wanted to discuss Bush's past during the primaries.

If Guiliani does get the nomination, I hope that whoever the Democratic nominee happens to be will have the guts to go for the jugular--or maybe a little lower on Rudy's anatomy.

6. I agree Huckabee could be one to watch. He says the right
things on issues many moderates care about.

I will have to remind people that bush came off as a moderate during the 2000 election.

7. That's why he concerns me--he has Bush's folksy, pious schtick without the arrogance
He comes off as a nice guy, sort of sweet and sincere. That religious rhetoric turns me off but no doubt is music to the ears of religious conservatives.

My guess is that unless he's on board with the big business wing of the party who can't be likeing his rather moderate positions on economic and environmental issues he's not going anywhere.

If he's a deep down free market conservative masking his real positions with moderate rhetoric, and that is understood to be the case by the business interests that run the GOP, he would be allowed to get the nomination.

10. Then they'd have no objection to him--too bad.
He appeals to the fundies. If he is an apologist for big business then only group then that would have serious objections to this guy would be the neocons. I have a feeling that the neocons are out of favor with the GOP establishment as represented by Poppy and Baker and company not to mention the rank and file.

I'm thinking he could end up being the one unless they've decided to bet the farm on Rudy. Seems to me like they're throwing STRAIGHT TALK JOHNNY McCain under a bus.

12. If Chuck Hagel can get past the primaries and get the Repub nom, we would
have a hard time beating him.

Thank goodness Republican primary voters are not likely to be reasonable.

13. K&R.. I was truly digging your style of writing until you wrote this...
"EYE OF NEWT: (Newt Gingrich) 140 30-1
He's Baaack."

After reading that bit of copy, I began howling! Then, after my laughter subsided, I put the K&R to it and gave you a 6th vote...

Here's a picture for good measure:

The Eastern Newt, has several different life stages. The larval stage, while similar in color to the adult, is smaller with flower-like gills coming from its head.

The larvae leave the water in late Summer and transform into efts. Efts live on land for up to four years. They do not have gills, but like all newts and salamanders, must keep their skin moist. They are most often seen crawling around after a heavy rain. Efts eat small insects (especially springtails), snails, and other small arthropods. In Winter, efts will hibernate under logs or stones.

The eft stage has poisonous chemicals in its skin so predators will not eat them. Adult newts and larvae are eaten by fish, turtles, birds, and other predators. Adult Eastern Newts have four toes on their front feet and five toes on their back feet.

Based on habitat potential, Cox and Kautz (2000) list several public land holdings that might support striped newts in Florida, which need to be surveyed, then carefully monitored in that state.

Although striped newts are not protected by Federal statutes, the government is concerned about their status and considers the species Under Review. Similar measures to protect viability of newts is also under consideration by state officials in Florida.

14. hey,I've only got one more good picture! I guess I'd better get to work...

this one will be fun

The History of the Romney Sheep

The Romney traces its beginning to the marshy area of Kent in England. Its origin lies with the old, established dual purpose Romney Marsh breed which was improved with Leicester blood in the nineteenth century. Often swept with harsh winds and heavy rainfall, the Kent landscape is abundant with lush forage.
