LouisianaPoll: Jindal bests Blanco in new battle for governor

BATON ROUGE -- U.S. Rep. Bobby Jindal would handily defeat Gov. Kathleen Blanco if a rematch of their 2003 governor's race were held today, according to an independent survey that also suggests many Louisianians have already made up their mind about a contest that is still more than nine months away.

Republican Jindal leads Blanco, a Democrat, 59 percent to 35 percent, according to a survey of 600 likely voters conducted during the weekend by Southern Media and Opinion Research.

In a three-way race with Democratic Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell, Jindal leads Blanco 58 percent to 31 percent, with Campbell pulling 6 percent.

Besides confirming what analysts have been saying for months -- that the incumbent governor enters her re-election year as a political underdog -- the poll also suggests that voters' views of the candidates are fairly settled.

I am a former resident of Louisiana and I love the state but it looks like recent demographic changes have made Louisiana nearly as red as Utah and Mississippi. I can't think of a Democrat who could win a statewide vote except perhaps John Breaux (who isn't any kind of Democrat I would want to support.)

Landrieu is doing similarly badly...

Its time to pull our resources out of Louisiana and into other states.

Landrieu still has time to come back and win in 2008.

she barely won in '02 and she is now facing vastly different demographics in her hometown (New Orleans) and Democrats don't seem to like her based on her positions than repubs do.

2. One of the main reasons for letting NOLA drown was to

turn LA from blue to red. Looks like it worked.

4. I say we fight. Blanco can run some white-knuckled ads about

what she did accomplish in the wake of Katrina (far, far more than Bush and Brownie). Picture a black and white montage of New Orleans devastation with a voice-over to the effect: "The Bush administration thought they'd dodged a bullet. When the bullet struck, the people of New Orleans and coastal regions were left to bleed. They are American citizens. Governor Blanco ... (then a list of her visible efforts to assist)." The ad closes with a close-up endorsement from John Breaux, whose voice is used in the ad for the voice-over.

Plus it's a presidential election year, and Iraq doesn't appear to be one of those issues that's exactly working for Republicans. The GOP is in a very compromised position. Their candidates suck and ours are strong.

I say Gov. Blanco can make a real go of this race, and I'm for her to kick Jindal's ass.

Blanco is okay, but naturally has gotten no help from the Repuke legislature--they're obstructing everything in an effort to make her look bad.

6. Aren't both basically "Pro-life" moderate conservatives?

From what I remember about Jindal, he's a "Pro-life" moderate conservative. So is Blanco...

So what's the difference?

7. Jindal is a sniveling little weasel who is completely and totally

enamored with bush.

After the 2004 election, when grevances about Ohio were brought up, Jindal spoke about how by questioning the validity of the election we were setting a bad example for Iraq and Afghanistan.

8. A lot of pro-choice people voted for Blanco

because the alternative was so bad. Then, she turns around and signs the bill that would outlaw abortion in Louisiana. She made a statement the she felt that the law should have made an exception for rape, but that was not a good enough reason to not sign the bill.

In other words, a cluster-fuck for women who are raped. If Blanco signed the bill to score political points, hope she goes down in flames.
