Poll question: New poll...this time one with Gore included.

I'm sorry to do this again. In my last poll I didn't include the name of Al Gore and many people have him as their top choice. So i'm doing this more open this time. I'm including everyone I can think of who is running...

This is actually part of a project i'm working on. So I hope you all can help out and have some fun at the same time. I hope you can include one or two reasons why you support the candidate you have chosen.

I'm supporting Gore because I think he is the best qualified, has the best positions and is the most principled man in the race.

But,

Jim Webb is not a flash-in-the-pan.

Webb is not a one issue candidate.

Like Al Gore, Jim Webb can teach us all that BACKBONE counts.

Jim Webb not only believes in Democratic values, but communicates these values directly with millions of independents, moderates, and even disaffected Republicans.

A quick survey of today's "Greatest Threads" will suugest that if Jim Webb were on this list he could perhaps be as high as the top 3, 4, or 5 in this poll (& certainly more than candidate #10.) (Is this unbelievable, or what??)

Despite the naysayers, many believe that a survey in 1 month, 6 months, or 12 months from now will show that Jim Webb's appeal is more than skin deep.

The lessons Jim Webb can teach us can solidify a lasting, broadbased, and non-corporatist Democratic majority.






As much as I like Al Gore (and my vote would still be for Gore, Webb or no Webb), Jim Webb is a candidate that would actually strengthen a ticket with Gore at the top.

As many have observed, Webb is "presidential".

So, where is Jim Webb's slot in the poll ???????????????????

5. I support Al Gore because he already won once

and can do it again. Plus: (a) he saw the potential of the internet (even if he didn't "invent" it) and worked to make it available for the public; (b) he saw the danger of global climate change and has worked for years to spread the word; (c) he was once seduced by the DLCers but I think he learned his lesson and has returned to his roots (Albert Gore, Sr. was much more liberal than Jr. was during his tenure with Clinton, but now I think he's returned to being more like his dad); (d) he has no personal baggage (happy marriage, well-behaved kids); (e) best resume in the party currently; and (f) best bumper sticker: RE-ELECT PRESIDENT GORE.

If wanting to be President now is actually crazy. Who in their right mind would really want this now unless they are totally into themselves and has stock in Diebold? In all honesty, perhaps someone who caused this mess to be made should have to be forced to deal with it and clean it up. You know, as their penance rather than the ego contest that running for president in this country has become. It's just amazing to me how much time and energy is expended fawning all over being president in this country. You would think we really did live in an aristocracy.

15. I voted Edwards, but...

I voted for Edwards because I like that he actually talks about poverty and the fact that there is a class system. No one else does that.

However, I coud have just as easily voted for Gore because I think he'd make the environment a VERY high priority, and I believe the environment is the number one issue facing humanity today.

So these two in any combination are a good ticket for me, but I'd also like either Edwards or Gore with Clark as VP.

I don't think Hillary is electable. And I'd just as soon break the Bush/Clinton/Bush political aristocracy.

Al Gore is the best person to get us back on track. I care that the election was stolen from him in 2000. However, that's not why I'm supporting him now. I just think he's got the perfect combination of character, intellect, humility and statesmanship to get us out of the mess we're in. For those who say he should concentrate on global warming, my contention is the mess we've created in the mideast and the environment are so intertwined, whatever action you take on one affects policies on the other. Additionally, he's not really an expert on global warming. Yes, he knows a lot about it, and passionately cares about it. However, he's not an expert on it. He's really the frontman for the experts. And as president, he would be able to put the real experts in places where they're needed, in our gov't., and out in the world in diplomatic positions where we can start working with other nations to bring our ailing planet back to health.

There were two good reasons why Al Gore picked Joe Lieberman as his running mate in 2000.

1. Gore was looking for a way to send out the signal that he did not approve of Bill Clinton's abuse of power (as Whitehouse boss) over a young, vulnerable (low self-esteem), star-struck intern, plus his subsequent untruthful and misleading statements on the matter (not even 'fessing up to his wife and his VP).

Lieberman was one of the first Democratic Senators to publicly condemn Clinton's misbehavior (even if it was not grounds for impeachment - I would say it was grounds for standing down in favour of Gore sometime in 1999).

2. Gore strongly believes in diversity and building a more inclusive America. Like it or not, as a non-Christian, Joe Lieberman counts as a minority in national politics.

In 2003-4, Al Gore endorsed Howard Dean (not Joe Lieberman). One of the main reasons he gave for his decision was that Dean did not support the war in Iraq.
"He was the only major candidate who made the correct judgment about the Iraq war," Gore said. "And he had the insight and the courage to say and do the right thing. And that's important because those judgments -- that basic common sense -- is what you want in a president."*

If (as I wish!) Gore is the Dem nominee in 2008, I predict he will choose a running mate who has been critical of Bush on Iraq.

35. Your first argument sorta makes sense (when one drops the

hyperboyle out) in that Gore wanted to signal that he wasn't Clinton in a moral sense.

Your second argument makes no sense to me. I think a better analysis is he chose Liebermann because he needed to win Florida, which, with Lieberman's help, he did.

I see everything that is going on right now as creating a "Perfect Storm" for Al Gore.

Hillary has been forced to show her hand a full 12 months before the start of the primaries!!

This means people have a full 12 months to ask Hillary about her position on Iraq, and why has she been so supportive of the illegitimate (p)Resident of the Whitehouse these past 5 years ....

People also have time to get tired of Hillary's campaign. What we might call "Hillary fatigue".

The field is getting very crowded and it will be tough for candidates to gain traction.

I like and respect both Obama and (especially) Edwards. But the fact is they are both relatively inexperienced and unqualified if you compare them to Al Gore. Obama has been 2 years in the Senate and Edwards was 6 years (but the last 2 of those he was focusing on the 2004 campaign).

I respect the fact that Edwards has come clean about the situation in Iraq, and has admitted he was wrong to co-sponsor the IWR. But I respect much MORE the fact that Gore spoke out agains the Bu$h-Cheney-Rumsfeld policy on Iraq from the beginning - in speeches going back to 2002 - insisting on giving the UN inspectors more time to carry out their mission and maintaining a broad international consensus.

Al Gore is without a doubt the best qualified person for the job, in terms of his experience, knowledge, intelligence and judgement.

There is no hurry for Gore to enter the race for 2008. He is doing a great job raising public awareness about the climate crisis (he spoke to 10 000 people in Boise on Monday!). Hopefully he might even get on stage at the Oscar ceremony!

Gore is also busy working on his next book "The Assault on Reason" - to be published in May*. The theme of this book - why we need better decision-making in government - is very timely in relation to next year's Presidential election (whether he runs or not).

Depending on how things pan out, and the reaction to his forthcoming book, Gore can consider his situation over the summer and announce his decision (or if you prefer - "change his mind") sometime in the fall.

Don't forget that Bill Clinton did not start his campaign until October 1991 - 12 weeks before the start of the '92 primaries. But Al Gore already has nationwide respect and name recognition that other wannabees can only wish for!

And by the way - Gore is younger than Hillary, Clark, Kerry, McCain and Guiliani! :)

Unless and until Gore endorses another candidate, we have to assume that he is keeping his options open. So it is too soon for those of us who prefer Gore to switch our allegiance.

How can any of us support someone who voted for the biggest blunder in our history (IRAQ authorization)? Excuses are fine and work to some degree but if these guys were duped by chimpy then can they actualy be expected to lead us from this dark place? ...
